Meeting between „The Return of the Neophron“ project team and paraglide clubs from Northeast Bulgaria was conducted in Madara village, with the help of the mayor Mrs Antoaneta Ivanova. Host of the small event was Mr. Dimo Dimov manager of „Madarski konnik“ hut. Among the most important subjects in the discussions were some difficulties for the followers of this attractive sport - when they can start the flights and how long they can stay in the sky close to nests of cliff nesting birds during the breeding season. The last one because causing disturbance with fatal consequences for the hatch of the birds. The participants in the meeting showed positive will to cooperate with each other in order to find an acceptable solution for these problems that will satisfy both sides.

In conclusion, it is unlikely that dietary limitations on reproductive output are a critical threat to Egyptian vultures on the Balkan Peninsula. The negative relationship between dietary diversity and territory occupancy rate may be due to a higher susceptibility of adults to poisoning, and more information on the effect of diet availability on adult and juvenile survival would be useful to inform and improve conservation management actions. Providing safe food for Egyptian vultures in the short term, seems an urgent and effective conservation measure for decreasing the risk of poisoning and increasing the persistence of the population in the core areas.

The workshop brought together over 70 government officials, scientists, researchers and specialists from 33 countries in which the vultures breed, visit or spend the winter. During the workshop a combination of the following threats have been identified to cause Egyptian vulture population declines: poisoning, due to persecution of predators or inappropriate use of agricultural chemicals, prevailing use of lead shot; insufficient amount of accessible food caused by habitat degradation and santiation practices; collisions with windfarms and electrocutions on power lines; disturbance at breeding sites illegal harvesting for traditional medicine in some African countries.

Despite being banned since 1993, the use of poison baits is a common practice in Greek rural areas threatening with extinction a long list of protected species. During the period 2012-2015, the Greek Antipoison Task Force recorded in total of 163 events and conducted analysis aiming to shed some light on the consequences, reasons and factors driving this practice. The toxicological analyses carried out show that there's a wide range of chemical substances used, usually pesticides legal or banned. Scavenger bird species are the wildlife group most affected by the use of poison baits (30% of all poisoned animals), however working dogs are the most affected group of animals as a whole (39%).

Тhe report includes information from 87 different territories and breeding performance of 376 territorial pairs between 2003 – 2014, with an overall territory occupancy rate of 69% and a mean productivity of 0.80 fledglings per occupied territory. The report examines which of 48 different environmental variables were most influential in explaining variation in territory occupancy and breeding success using algorithmic random forest models. Territory occupancy is best explained by food availability, geographic structure, and nesting opportunities, while breeding success is best explained by the number of adjacent villages, topography, and nesting opportunities.

Vultures have lived close by mankind from the beginnings of history. It is celebrated in many tales and legends, and is considered sacred in many cultures. Tireless natural cleaners and loving parents, vultures have always inspired people, but today they are facing extinction. The aim of the Vulture awareness day is to open people’s eyes about the role of the vultures in nature, threats that they are facing and the need for vulture conservation. BSPB/Birdlife Bulgaria is working for vulture conservation since its founding in 1988. Thanks to the implemented conservation activities and the support from the local people the colony of the Griffon vulture has increased from 10 pairs in 1991 to 67 pairs in 2013. Nowadays the only wild colony of Griffon vultures in Bulgaria is in Eastern Rhodopes, the region is also of main importance for the protection of the Endangered Egyptian vulture.

According to the results from Greece, there is a wide range of proposed measures against illegal use of poison baits which should aim to resolve a quite wide list of potential conflicts such as the conflict between hunters and livestock breeders in relation to the attacks of shepherd dogs on hunting dogs. Moreover, conflict between hare-hunting practices and foxes, conflict between sheep and goats livestock-farming and wolves and finally conflict between village and urban residents and stray dogs.

Data on occupancy in 87 different territories and breeding performance of 405 territory-monitoring years between 2003 – 2015, with an overall territory occupancy rate of 69% and a mean productivity of 0.80 fledglings per occupied territory, were used for the aim of analysis. The paper examined which of 48 different environmental variables were most influential in explaining variation in territory occupancy and breeding success in Bulgaria and Greece, and tested whether these models were transferrable to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Territory occupancy and breeding success were affected by a wide range of environmental variables, each of which had a small effect that may not be the same across political boundaries. Both models had reasonably good discriminative ability, but were unsuccessful in predicting occupancy or breeding success in the external validation data set from a different country. Management dealing on a small number of environmental variables is unlikely to be effective in slowing the decline of Egyptian Vultures on the Balkan Peninsula. Recommend measures in the short term should be focused on the reduction of adult mortality through the enforcement of anti-poison laws, and in the long term – to the adoption of large-scale landscape conservation programs that retain or restore historical small-scale farming practices may benefit vultures and other biodiversity.

The main advantage the smugglers have in the Balkans countries is precisely that, the lack of awareness, not only of the general public, but also of the competent authorities. For this reason, the LIFE+ project “The Return of the Neophron” has set to reverse in some degree this situation and increase the level of awareness. For this, several seminars on the problem and extent of illegal wildlife trade have taken place in the most important and relevant Customs Offices in Greece and Bulgaria. Some of these seminars where implemented in collaboration with the UK Border Force, meaning experts of this country have come to share their experience and knowledge on the matter. Aiming to take this training a step further, the LIFE project organized a training trip to the UK in November. During this trip, a selected Customs Officer from the Athens Airport Customs travelled for a week to the UK, having the opportunity to participate in the 27th UK Wildlife Crime Enforcers Conference, but also to meet, discuss and see in action the National Wildlife Crime Unit in Livingstone, Scotland, the London’s Metropolitan Police and the Heathrow Airport Customs CITES team.
