In autumn plumage birds have a much of rusty tones; males have a bit of blue on the bib; females have more less blue or not have at all. The autumn juveniles and spring (till the middle of the summer) first-year birds are distinguished from the older birds by the wing bar formed by the light buffy borders of the greater coverts. Weight 13-26 grams, length 14-16, wing 6,8-8,5, wingspan 20-24 cm.

In second year craw becomes much rufous; but only in third year craw becomes bright-rufous. Bill is dark-brown with slightly paler base, eyes are walnut color, legs and claws are black-brown. Sizes: wing 64-71, tail 48-57, tarsus 16-18. Weight: 8.4 - 10.6 gr.

The light edges on the flight feathers are faintly expressed. It is most resembles the Blyth's Reed, Paddyfield and Marsh Warbles. From Blyth's Reed Warbler it is distinguished by the buffy tone domination and the expressed rusty uppertail; from Marsh Wrbler by the same characters and the dark legs (grey-brown without buffy domination); from the Paddyfield Warbler by the flattening forehead, slimmer constitution; narrow faint supercilium; plain monochromatic upperparts; dark legs. The seasonal differences of plumage are insignificant. The adult birds have light-brown “hawk” eyes. Juveniles have brown eyes; plumage is slightly rusty than on adults. Contact features: 2nd primary is longer than 5th, on folded wing the primaries projection is more than 15 mm; the claw of rear finger is about the finger on length. Weight 9-15 grams, length about 13, wing 5,9-7,4, wingspan 17-21 cm.

The Yellow Wagtail is slightly less than White Wagtail with shorter tail. The male in breeding plumage has brightly-yellow underparts and greenish-yellow upperparts. The color and pattern of the head are very variable on different subspecies from all-white to dark-grey (please see the "Races" chapter). The flight feathers and wing coverts are dark-brown with pale edges of the outer webs. On the last secondaries and greater coverts these edges are broad pale-yellow. Two outer pairs of the tail feather are white with black patches on the inner webs, all other tail feather are black with narrow yellowish edges. The bill and legs are black, eyes are brown. The female in breeding plumage is plain grayish-brown above sometimes with green tinge expressed to uppertail having yellowish-green color. The underparts are white or pale-yellow; from the chin to undertail the color changes from almost white to brightly-yellow. After autumn plumage adult birds have grayish-olive tone; the head and mantle are same color; the ear coverts are not darker than other head parts. Underparts are yellow or yellowish-white. Juveniles are dirty buff-brownish above with buffy-whitish edges of wing coverts. Underparts are buffy, flanks are brownish. The throat and craw are dark mottled; legs are brownish. Juveniles are distinguished from juveniles of White Wagtail by the domination of the brown and rusty tones; by the expressive pale supercilium including between the eye and bill. In August juveniles become similar on autumn females and have some yellow on the abdomen. 14-24 grams, length about 17, wing 7,4-8,7, wingspan 23-27 cm.

The first plumage is dark and colourful, usually with distinctive rufous edges of feathers, often with greyish or rufous pattern in shoulders, great wing coverts, tail feathers, often plumage greyish tinged; underparts in fresh plumage also much rufous with broad dark-brownish streaks (sometimes barred on flanks, especially in males). Less than Peregrine Falcons of northern group, male wings 288-312, female wings 320-355, average 294,9 and 335,8 mm.

The bill is dark, strong and pointed; the legs are lead-grey; the eyes are brownish. The sexes are identical. In fresh plumage the upperparts are rusty-brown rufous tinged; the underparts have clayey tone. Juveniles have rustier tinge; are heavily streaked and have markings on the breast. Weight 10,6-13,6 grams, length about 140, wing 58-62, tail 52-59 mm.
