The beginning of modernization coincided with an important economic fact. In 1908 in southwest Persia the first oil was discovered in the Middle East, after which the Anglo-Persian (later Anglo-Iranian) Oil Company, a predecessor of BP, was established. In 1912 the company opened a refinery in Abadan that remained the largest in the world for a long time. The Netherlands had a special role in the beginnings of colonialism. Through the United East India Company (VOC) it sent as many ships to Asia as all other countries combined. Active from South Africa to China and Japan and employing 50,000 workers, the VOC qualifies as the world’s first multinational. From 1641 to 1854 the Dutch Decima settlement was the only European trading post in Japan (154). In addition, the VOC had dozens of major and minor outposts along the coasts of India, Ceylon, and Indonesia (155). In the Americas Dutch merchants and plantation owners were especially active in the Caribbean (156).

South Limburg, where the Slovenians arrived, was originally agrarian but now an emerging industrial area. There was plenty of work and wages were good but there was a severe housing shortage. To solve the problem, new residential areas or 'colonies' and workers' tenements were promptly built by the mines with the help of the Church. However, immigrants seemed to prefer a board and lodging arrangement which often allowed them to live in together with other family members and friends.

Anno 2009 ademt de Hopel misschien wel als enige overgebleven kolonie in Zuid-Limburg de sfeer van de tijd toen de mijnen opkwamen en de Laura karakteristieke huizen voor haar arbeiders bouwde.

The arrival of the first newcomers between 1907 and 1910 laid the basis for the international village that would become De Hopel, traces of which can still be seen today. They came from Germany, Poland, Italy and Yugoslavia and their descendants still live there. Slovenian life in the colony would not have been terribly different in De Hopel or, for example, De Husken in Heerlen or De Rozengaard in Brunssum. Every district had at the very least a Slovenian choral society and a Tamburica - a group of musicians that plays the tamburica, a typical Yugoslav stringed instrument with a long neck, a type of lute. The latter existed in De Hopel from 1946 to 1952 and was led by Avgust Cebin and his son Leo. De Hopel today is perhaps the only remaining colony in South Limburg that still exudes the character of the period when the mines arrived and De Laura built the distinctive workers' homes. Between 1907 and 1910 the buildings, which had rounded gables at the front, were whitewashed and tarred between the planks. Red roof tiles were placed. The houses had large gardens surrounded by wooden fencing. In 1980, the houses in De Hopel were deemed protected monuments. This led to them becoming the subject of a large-scale renovation project which has now been completed.

The first anti-colonial movements arose in colonies with many European immigrants, especially in the Americas. While military forces resisted the European presence elsewhere – for example Tipu Sultan in South India and Diepo Negoro on Java – movements based on egalitarian ideals emerged later on, starting in India. The victory of an Asian over a European country in the Russian-Japanese war (1905) and the Chinese Revolution of 1911-1912 served as inspiration to colonized peoples. After the First World War these movements established increasing ties, promoted by communist and other international conferences and organizations (168). Internally, the independence movement was often as divided as the political movements in the metropolis. In the Dutch East Indies, for example, Marxists such as Tan Malaka (169-171) seriously disagreed with nationalists such as Mohammed Hatta (172-174).
