  History Takes Place: Is...
Reality and imagination blur in our images of Istanbul. Breathtaking panoramas seem to open up views of the entire city, which appears as a whole that encompasses space and time. However, those who immerse themselves into the pulsating metropolis with its nearly 15 million inhabitants soon realize that Istanbul cannot be fully grasped or represented in its entirety. With every step there is a layering of traces of wide-ranging historical eras, which impacts on the present.

are two architecture studios who use architecture as a medium to build new relationships to our environment and our fellow human beings. They don’t only focus on built projects, but also on the things that happen during their participatory interventions. The architecture becomes a tool and the city a laboratory. This book is a call to arms for people to take part in shaping their world and, above all, to transform themselves from passive consumers to active co-producers of the city.

“You will seldom find less handicaps in society at large than in Atelier Goldstein.” Sprawling urban models and convoluted architecture in miniature format; majestic aeroplanes made of cardboard; expressive portraits in bright colours and delicate icons … the artists of the “Atelier Goldstein” in Frankfurt create new worlds – and change our view of our own world. This publication, the first comprehensive show of work by the studio, presents eight Goldstein artists with more than 450 illustrations. Supplementary essays introduce the personalities and their working methods, and authors like Jonathan Meese bridge the gap between art and life:
  Hear Green, Think Yello...
There is hardly anything that determines how we view the world to the same extent as color. It differentiates, organizes, and structures our surroundings. Color is a medium that has a strong influence on our feelings, whilst being perceived quite differently and rarely altogether consciously. Context, general seeing patterns, and subjective criteria play a decisive role in the perception and evaluation of color. What does this mean in terms of how we handle color as a design element? How can one learn to apply such an inconsistent medium in a more targeted manner and what must one take into consideration in the process?

Future façades will become three-dimensional displays. New developments in display technology, so called voxels allow revolutionary architectural expressions. Whereas spatial expressions till present were determinated by the physical attributes of the building material, voxel displays will shift these borders. An intangible material, light points, defines space and allows surface attributes, such as: Dynamic relief, multilayered surface, decay function, privileged perspective, movement and speed and design process. By the example of spectacular contemporary projects, the book presents recent developments of three-dimensional display technology, showing its significance for our understanding of space and architecture.

The neighbours are a mystery to us. Who are the people next door? We see them every day, but we don’t actually know them at all. The photographer Arabella Schwarzkopf has taken a look at this phenomenon, portraying her fellow tenants in New York, Tokyo, Bologna, Vienna, Berlin, Paris and Istanbul. The resulting intimate images reveal the heart of big-city life; curious, but never a voyeur, the photographer provides some fascinating insights into other people’s lives and reveals not only differences, but some astounding similarities between Asia, Europe and America. We see people in their apartments: confident, timid, touching – these photos alter our view of the microcosm “city” and of ourselves. They break down barriers, demonstrating the human diversity behind apparent anonymity. Arabella Schwarzkopf takes us on an exciting voyage of discovery to the exotic world next door.
Fantastic creatures of fable – drawn, modelled or fired in clay – give an insight into the astonishing diversity of work by the architect Karla Kowalski. In this book, she offers readers a comprehensive view of her creative work outside the architectural sphere. Using open hatching, dreams and desires are sketched as inner landscapes or the provinces of the soul; familiar figures are transformed – by weird metamorphoses – into bizarre creatures of unknown breeds, and the emergent monsters from another cosmos uncannily enter our everyday world. With their iridescent clothing, fur or skin, they are messengers of other truths beyond the reality that architects are able to conjure up with their designs – when they pursue their desires in drawing. Essays by Manfred Sack, Werner Durth, Peter Blundell Jones, Frank R. Werner and Karin Wilhelm throw light on Karla Kowalski’s drawings and sculptures from different angles, so helping to make this book into one that can also be read as the theory of a different kind of design; as a poetic corrective to the usual prescriptions of specialist literature.
