[person] (1886-1949) An American chemist and science educator. Gordon is most famous for his dedication to communicating science. He founded and was the first editor of the Journal of Chemical Education, published by the American Chemical Society, and established the Gordon Research Conferences, a venue to bring scientists together to discuss research on the frontiers of knowledge.

compounds that were eventually discovered each interfere with mitosis at different phases and for different reasons. It turns out that the compounds disrupt the assembly of microtubules – the special fibers that provide structure in the cell. Vinblastine binds to the tubulin subunits, preventing them from coming together.

Under Benerito's leadership, a team of chemists found one important piece of the “how to wrinkle-proof cotton” puzzle when they developed a new process for treating the fibers. The process, called cross-linking, joins new ring-shaped organic compounds to the polymer chains, replacing the hydrogen bonds with strong new chemical bonds (see Figure 4). (For more about basic organic compounds, see our Carbon Chemistry: An Introduction module.) Cross-linking keeps the polymers from breaking apart, so the cotton fabric comes out of the dryer without wrinkles.
