Statistics Canada analysts have demonstrated, in recent years, the power of administrative data to answer policy relevant questions. Linkage of administrative data records through time or across files represents a very low cost, but powerful, method of data development. The Agency will intensify its efforts in this area over the next three years while protecting the privacy of individuals and institutions, and ensuring the security of data in its care. One significant initiative will look at the potential to extend the life of longitudinal surveys conducted by Statistics Canada through linkage to administrative records. Another project will develop a data base associating employees with their employer to better understand workplace-workforce dynamics.

Statistics Canada is investing in its environmental statistics program. Environmental statistics need to be comprehensive, coherent and incorporated into the national statistical system in a manner that permits analysis in relationship to such dimensions as economic activity, well being, and health. Statistics Canada has played, and continues to play, a significant role in the development of the United Nations' System of Environmental and Economic Accounts, which seek to develop environmental accounts which parallel and can draw on the national accounts. In order to develop its environmental statistics program, the Agency has drafted a conceptual framework for the program in consultation with stakeholders and data users. This work will be validated and finalized in 2013-14. Once complete, the framework will be used to identify and prioritize data gaps in environmental statistics. This prioritization will be used to guide Statistics Canada's developmental efforts in this area.

I joined the two-year SI Recruitment Program in May of 2007. In my mind, the process seemed to take forever, but I knew I was up against a lot of competition within the Agency and was just simply anxious to get into the SI stream. I really couldn't have asked for more from the two teams that I have worked with. My immediate supervisors and chiefs have offered me a tremendous amount of support for my career advancement. I have amassed a ton of experience I can use in the future, and they have listened and allowed me to do my thing! It's very rare to find such a great team, or even management that listens to your opinions about the work. With such great team spirit, we are able to make lots of decisions in no time at all, and everyone gets to be a part of it. After all, communication is the key to having a successful team, and I am extremely happy with mine. It makes coming to work every day an even more enjoyable experience.
