As highlighted in the above chart, Health Canada has identified eight health and well-being issues, and their related vulnerabilities which need to be assessed to protect the health of Canadians from the possible effects of climate change. As part of this effort, in March 2001, Health Canada hosted, in partnership with the Canadian Climate Impacts and Adaptation Research Network (C-CIARN) of Natural Resources Canada, the First Annual National Health and Climate Change Science and Policy Research Consensus Conference involving a wide spectrum of national and international researchers and policy analysts. By identifying current gaps in knowledge the conference produced a climate change and health research agenda to guide future scientific efforts. Additional future climate change and health & well-beingconferences on research and policy will enhance the ability of all jurisdictions in Canada to address the risks to the public associated with climate change.

We are pleased to be able to deliver results to our growers and to provide the assurance that major regulatory barriers to developing NAFTA labeling have been resolved. This represents a significant milestone for both PMRA and U.S. EPA. We believe that the expansion of products under NAFTA labels will help remove potential trade barriers, help create a unified North American market for pesticides, and strengthen competitiveness of North American growers. The new label will serve as a model for other harmonized pesticides. Currently, 12 more pesticide products are in the pipeline for NAFTA label development.

This document contains the scientific assessment of Ground Level Ozone effects on human health, vegetation, materials and animals. The document was prepared primarily as a compilation of the Canadian 1996 NOx/VOC Science Assessment Reports2. Consequently, background sections of the document, included to provide contextual information for understanding the material on effects, have not been updated since publication of the NOxVOC reports. The information on health and environmental effects was augmented by a review of the most recent peer-reviewed and publicly available literature, current to mid-1997. The issue of the human health effects of ozone is, in particular, a field of inquiry that is evolving rapidly. The document itself has been externally peer-reviewed. Although prepared in support of revisions to the current NAAQOs for ground level ozone, this document will be used as scientific support for the development of Canada Wide Standards for ground-level ozone.

The ITK believes that a coordinating mechanism for climate change issues in the North is urgently needed, particularly for the Inuit to have meaningful input into current discussions. Currently, no coordinating mechanism exists. There are numerous research projects that are not being coordinated with the threat of duplication of research efforts and a poor use of research funds. There has also not been an identification of research gaps and research priorities. Ms. Moss-Davies indicated that ITK will provide a facilitative forum and will begin by coordinating activities in Inuit regions. It currently has secured funds fromNEI for an upcoming roundtable on Inuit and climate change. Further funds are being sought to make this initiative permanent and to develop a management committee to oversee such projects. In this regard, a funding proposal has been sent to Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC).

Health Canada is in the process of developing an inspection strategy to be used for scheduling inspections of registered cells, tissues and organ (CTO) programs in Canada. The goal is to implement an inspection strategy in which a risk based approach would be used to determine the frequency of inspections. As part of the implementation process, Health Canada consulted with stakeholders from December 2011-February 2012. In total 15 stakeholders provided comments and suggestions and this report provides a summary of that feedback.

A delegation of representatives from Health Canada's Tobacco Control Programme will share expertise, lessons learned and knowledge in the area of tobacco control with international delegates at the conference. Tobacco Control Programme representatives will be involved in a variety of presentations on issues including retailer compliance, health warning messages, surveillance, cigarette ignition propensity, secondhand smoke and the implementation of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Recent educational publications, research findings and policy documents produced by Health Canada will be disseminated to conference delegates at the Tobacco Control Programme exhibit booth.
