An assessment of the feasibility of establishing an NMCA in the selected area is carried out jointly with the provincial or territorial government involved, and with the participation of local Aboriginal communities or organizations. The feasibility assessment includes the gathering of information describing the proposed NMCA and an analysis to determine areas requiring the highest level of protection within its proposed boundaries. Ecologically sustainable use for the benefit of current and future generations is the objective for much of an NMCA. Consultations are undertaken at various stages to enable community representatives and other interests to work on developing a shared vision for the area with Parks Canada.

By comparing the health of an indicator to a target or desired level, progress in achieving the parks’ goals for ecological integrity can be assessed. Parks Canada is creating a long-term headwater refuge for Westslope Cutthroat Trout in Hidden Lake and the Upper Corral Creek area, made secure by a naturally-occurring waterfall barrier downstream. Brook Trout were removed from this refuge by means of netting, electrofishing and angling, and wild Westslope Cutthroat Trout will be translocated back into the lake and streams they once occupied in this valley.

Even though the settlement was short-lived, in the summer of 1605 they moved to the shores of the present-day Annapolis Basin in Nova Scotia where Port Royal was established, their experience taught them much. The invaluable experience they gained from this first settlement gave them the knowledge they needed to found a more successful settlement at Port Royal and gave way to an enduring French presence in North America to this present day.

It took the outbreak of the American Revolution in the 1770s to shift the focus back to Halifax’s land defences and the Citadel. Many Halifax residents had come from New England, and supported the revolution. Fearing the Americans would launch a land attack, British troops, led by Captain William Spry, constructed a new fort, using an expanded version of the plans from 1761. The highlight was a large octagonal tower, which served as a barracks for 100 soldiers.

In 1913, Jasper National Park superintendent, Lieutenant Colonel Maynard Rogers, was overseeing much of the early development of the Jasper townsite. He had visions of a unified architectural theme for the town, believing local materials and building methods should be used. With this in mind, Edmonton architect A. M. Calderon designed one of Jasper’s most handsome and important landmarks - what we know now as the Jasper Information Centre. This building served as an example for future buildings in the community of Jasper and began the custom of using a rustic building style in Canada’s national parks.

The broad purpose of these policies is to ensure that the many values, which the Canals provide to Canadians are sustained. One purpose of the funding is to create a regional management strategy for the Sturgeon River plains bison population. This population occupies a range including the west side of Prince Albert National Park (PANP) and lands outside of the park along the Sturgeon River. The free-ranging nature of the population leads to management issues on private, provincial, and federal lands. A committee of 14 members, representing all jurisdictions, some public interest groups, and individuals from various groups living in proximity to the Park, has drafted the strategy. Recommendations in the strategy include activities that can be undertaken on private lands to reduce the impacts of bison, reducing the cost to landowners associated with the presence of bison, as well as research-based adaptive management options that could be implemented outside and within the Park to influence the movements of bison. An integrated visitor activities data base will be developed and kept up to date for each national marine conservation area to provide, along with research, monitoring and evaluation, the visitor information required for management decisions and state of the parks reporting to Parliament. The information gained will be used to add to or improve existing opportunities, and in the development and review of management plans, service plans, and visitor risk management programs. Both activity data and infrastructure and environment data will be incorporated into risk assessments. Risk control measures will consider the experience needs of the visitor and promote visitor self-reliance accordingly.

- The class contribution program has enabled provinces and territories to implement the infrastructure to deliver HPI tools. The contribution agreements have been an effective mechanism for delivering activities. However, the process for annual renewal and the financial reporting are onerous and need to be simplified. Primary delivery partners recommend the use of multi-year agreements and simplification of reporting requirements. In addition, as all jurisdictions should soon be fully operational in terms of delivering core programs it may be time to re-assess the funding allocation. Previously, funding was largely to put in place infrastructure and resources to implement HPI tools, now it will likely be on providing support to continue to operate registers, undertake outreach activities, and perhaps to undertake complementary projects that were not possible until now. Funding is an issue that federal, provincial, and territorial governments should discuss together to ensure it meets partners' needs.
