We are pleased to be able to deliver results to our growers and to provide the assurance that major regulatory barriers to developing NAFTA labeling have been resolved. This represents a significant milestone for both PMRA and U.S. EPA. We believe that the expansion of products under NAFTA labels will help remove potential trade barriers, help create a unified North American market for pesticides, and strengthen competitiveness of North American growers. Health Canada is in the process of developing an inspection strategy to be used for scheduling inspections of registered cells, tissues and organ (CTO) programs in Canada. The goal is to implement an inspection strategy in which a risk based approach would be used to determine the frequency of inspections. As part of the implementation process, Health Canada consulted with stakeholders from December 2011-February 2012. In total 15 stakeholders provided comments and suggestions and this report provides a summary of that feedback.

There is increasing recognition in Canada that collaboration with paediatric academic clinical researchers in some form is necessary so that clinical trials performed to establish standards of paediatric care can also be used by the regulator in safety and efficacy reviews. The goal of this CIHR fellowship will be to examine the options for making the best use of evidence generated by academic clinicians domestically and internationally for the purpose of improving regulatory decision-making. This is essential to moving forward in designing a regulatory framework for paediatric drugs that may be represented through a continuum from clinical guidance, to incentives (such as the existing Extension of Paediatric Data Protection Regulation), to development of potential regulations similar to those enacted in the US and EU. It will also inform potential non-regulatory approaches.

This funding will complement the significant efforts made by the provincial government of Manitoba and the Dauphin municipal government to bring a hemp fibre processing plant to the Parkland area. The funding will be used to develop and demonstrate a process that will use raw industrial hemp fibre in the production of insulation and other products while reducing agricultural waste streams.
