On a recent trip to New York City I visited the Guggenheim Museum where about fourty Malevich paintings were exhibited. Somewhat bewildered by the meaning of these works of art, I wanted to know more about the artist and his work, both before, during and after his Supremist style.
On a recent trip to New York City I visited the Guggenheim Museum where about fourty Malevich paintings were exhibited. Somewhat bewildered by the meaning of these works of art, I wanted to know more about the artist and his work, both before, during and after his Supremist style. The museum book was an outrageous price, and being Canadian (with the high exchange rate and the high hotel bills luring over my head) I had to think twice about buying it. Then I notice this little Taschen book on Malevich. I bought it immediately. The value of this book is uncomparable. Neret makes it easy to to learn about a complicated man and his art, and the reproductions are many and marvellous. Thanks Taschen, I now feel informed.— Judith McEwen, Kanada

Well, all the more reason to flip through her book, which is packed with remembrances of memorable encounters, all of which are documented by her unglamorous photography. Buy it!"— Boyculture.com, New York, États-Unis

  Utagawa Hiroshige - Rev...
"Some of the most beautiful and eye-opening art books of the year ... I simply love this book. It faithfully reproduces on a single page, at a size close to the originals, 119 woodblock prints that Hiroshige (1797-1858) designed during the last two years of his life, redefining the landscape not only for Japanese art but for such Europeans as Whistler, Monet and Van Gogh, who copied or were inspired by them. Hiroshige's habit of combining a large foreground feature such as a tree trunk with a more distant view was quite new at the time and still fascinates. The commentaries on each of the illustrations are outstanding. The introduction is excellent, too, describing both Hiroshige's life and how his series relates to the tradition of printmaking. The price - for such a beautiful design, inspired by Japanese binding - is also amazing."— The Sunday Times, London, United Kingdom

It’s a twin volume, magnum opus of mid 20th century American ads covering many of the well known, not so well known, long extinct and still going strong corporations and brands.   Great Escapes Italy - R...
"You've won Lotto and fancy a trip to Italy to celebrate. This is the book to leaf through on a grey Canterbury afternoon while fantasizing about where to go and where to stay. This heavy tome, full of glossy photos and possibilities, is not a book for backpackers, freedom campers or anyone else who has to ponder the tariff before deciding whether a hotel is suitable. This is an upper-echelon hotel guide that celebrates Italy's rustic and historic traditions and glamorous lifestyle. The sunny photographs add to the spectacle and even the text being repeated in German and French ads to the atmosphere. It's a joy to dive into the 35 locations highlighted, from mountain resorts in the northern Alps, down to a former monastery at the tip of Italy's heel and islands. But the ultimate joy would be to plan a holiday based on the book, right after the Lotto win, of course."— The Press, Christchurch, New Zealand

. Viewers of the show do not see the final photos, but that's not the case in the monograph: the first page shows Kern setting up a shot between a model's legs; turn the page and there's the girl's underwear from below…. In Kern's photos, ordinary girls look like they are in another dimension where it is as erotic to have toothpaste dribbling down one's chin as it is to be spread eagle on a bed.

"Physically the largest art book of the year, to be read while standing at a lectern, this is seductively beautiful — even its jacket is liberally gilded and embossed, and never have there been such illustrations on a scale that gives us the grain of canvas and every precious decorative element in the stupendous mosaics of the Palais Stoclet, the Sistine Chapel of Secessionism. Yet this is a thoroughly serious examination of Klimt from his ambitious beginnings as a Salon painter, into the Secession and on to the familiar Klimt, symbolist, mystical, sensual, sexual, decadent and marvellous, seeming as old as the sphinx and as modern as his morrow. Here is a man obsessed with women and their mysterious sexuality, a great draughtsman and painter, and yet dissatisfied with himself and his work. The book concludes with a catalogue raisonné to make the sane rejoice."— Brian Sewell in The Evening Standard, London, United Kingdom

is too heavy to cuddle up with on the couch. This latest tome in TASCHEN’s series of bigger-is-better photography books on great cities needs to spread out on a coffee table of its own. Why another photo book on the most photogenic city in the world, you might ask? One answer is that TASCHEN has already published similar photographic portraits of New York, Los Angeles and Berlin; London comes next. Another is that this book is a photographic study of more than 160 years of the city’s history through the eyes of Jean Claude Gautrand, a 79-year-old photographer and photo editor who is one of France’s most eminent experts on photography. Gautrand spent three and a half years deep in the archives, libraries and private collections of Paris, sifting through hundreds of thousands of files, searching for unknown images by anonymous photographers to pair with what he calls 'the greats'. Yet the books also captures more intimate moments, scenes of everyday pleasure, routine and suffering: on the streets, park benches and bridges; in the cafes, nightclubs, strip joints, parks, artists’ ateliers. One daring undated photo between the two world wars shows women — some of them elegantly dressed as men — socializing in a popular lesbian nightclub. The book also celebrates the technical achievements of the French, starting with the shadowy images of Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre, who invented photography when he succeeded in fixing an image formed inside a camera on a silver plate."— The New York Times, New York, États-Unis

  Art of the 20th Century...
“This is unquestionably a work for the layperson and the expert, one which sweeps the reader along on a breathless journey through the gamut of 20th Century art. It’s an encyclopedic, literate and civilized study, too expansive to be absorbed in a single reading but one which reveals its work when taken in small, digestible bites… The quality of the colour reproductions is excellent – always a challenge for any art book – and the layout adds to it’s clarity. For a relatively small price, it’s a worthy addition to any library.”— Dominion Post Weekend, New Zealand, New Zealand

For a relatively small price, it’s a worthy addition to any library.”— Dominion Post Weekend, New Zealand, Nouvelle-Zélande

  Keel's Simple Diary Vol...
"Welcome to the Keel's Simple Diary, TASCHEN's entertaining twist on the everyday journal. Sold in lime green, brown, royal blue, red, orange, and yellow, the $15 diary is like journaling meets Mad Libs for adults... . But the Keel's Simple Diary makes it easy to write when you want and where you want - whether in bed or laying on a beach. It's a great method for keeping track of your days and, if you're lucky, learning some things about yourself along the way."— Stylesectionla.com, United States
"J’aime! Il a la taille idéale pour être emporté partout. Les pages déjà pré-écrites en partie aident à cibler ce qu’on veut dire. Ça évite de broder inutilement autour de tas de sujets. Mais j’avoue que dans mon cas, sur les pages déjà remplies, il y a plein d’annotations & ajoutées qui donnent un côté marrant à ce journal."— maboiteamusique.over-blog.com, Paris, France

nice to look at, but if you read, it's a waste of time. in this case, however, not only are the reproductions very well done, but the text is very insightful, and provided a good deal of new insight on a fabulous artist.
this is really a great book. i love the format, the text, and the art is very well done. it's a minor thing, but i like that the dimensions of the artwork is given in the caption. that's how an art book should be, and it always drives me crazy when you have to hunt for the information, or worse, when it's not in the book at all. as an artist, it is critical to know the size of the pice that is shown. understanding the image size is eseential to a completre understanding of the image. no matter how well written, if this information isn't in the book, it's not a book about art, it's a coffee table book. nice to look at, but if you read, it's a waste of time. in this case, however, not only are the reproductions very well done, but the text is very insightful, and provided a good deal of new insight on a fabulous artist. thoroughly enjoyed it.— michael wiant, États-Unis

  Trespass. History of Ur...
"'Graffiti is the sight of an unregulated free market getting the kind of art it deserves. And although some people might say it's all a big waste of time, no one cares about their opinion if their name isn't written in huge letters on the bridge into town.' Urban street legend Banksy's preface kickstarts this thick collection of street art, part of the growing embrace by the art establishment of spraycan jockeys and guerrilla stencillers. Immaculately produced by TASCHEN it examines the spread of graffiti art with key works by 150 artists, hundreds of colour reproductions and essays by Anne Pasternak, Tony Serra, Carlo McCormick, Marc and Sara Schiller and Banksy himself. The book traces events, protests and works by four generations of outlaw artists... visually it is impressive, and includes dozens of previously unpublished photographs of long-lost works and legendary, ephemeral wall daubs. ... Leafing through Trespass one has to consider if the need of mankind to express itself has changed vastly since the first cave paintings were scratched with a stick and ochre on a dark wall? Or maybe everything old is new again."— Mirror, London, United Kingdom
