In August 2013, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Technical Centre for Agriculture and Rural Cooperation (CTA) ran a regional training workshop on Geographical Indications (GIs) and branding strategies for CARICOM countries. At the workshop, the government of Grenada announced it intended “to use the system of Geographical Indications together with other intellectual property tools to protect its nutmeg and other spices”, as part of a branding and market positioning strategy for its herbs and spices sector, and for the island as a whole. It was noted that Caribbean producers and governments have made little use to date of GI designations as part of branding and marketing strategies.
