Mae’r Garfield Weston Foundation yn dathlu ei ben-blwydd yn 60 mlwydd oed gyda chynllun grantiau un tro ar gyfer cymunedau lleol. The Garfield Weston Foundation is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a one-off grants scheme for local communities. The Fund will provide grants of £30,000 to £150,000 for projects that provide new, or improve existing community facilities for people across the UK.

The project must be working with young people between 14 to 19 years of age. The Trust supports charities, not-for-profit organisations and voluntary groups and is eager to support volunteer-based projects, particularly from ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.

Yn rhan o’r adroddiad etifeddiaeth, roedd y pwyllgor yn credu ei fod yn bwysig bod plant a phobl ifanc yn cael dweud eu dweud ynghylch y materion sydd bwysicaf iddyn nhw ac yn rhannu’r newidiadau’r hoffent eu gweld yng Nghymru.
As part of the legacy report, the committee thought it was important for children and young people to have their say on the issues that matter most to them and to share the changes they would like to see in Wales and so they were asked to contribute. There was lots of input from young people across Wales with a total of 1,380 responses! The youngest participant was six years old and the oldest was 25.

The presentation introduces the initial results of fieldwork that investigates the relationship between children and mobile digital technology in outdoor play, based in an adventure playground in southwest England. It is part of a PhD project that takes a detailed look at how children (10-15 years) and mobile digital technology mix together in outdoor play, and suggests different ways of looking at the issues.

Linda Åkeson McGurk is an American-Swedish freelance journalist and founder of ‘Rain or Shine Mamma’, a blog dedicated to inspiring outdoor play and adventure, regardless of weather. In the article, she lists five reasons why forest (or outdoor) schools are beneficial to nursery aged children in the USA. They include, being more physically active, allowing more time for imaginative play and the ability to become better at judging risk.

A Unicef study has found that reading, singing and drawing are ‘the missing link between survival and school’ that hinders children’s development. A quarter of children under five in developing countries miss out on these activities which are crucial in early development. The report identified three policies essential to supporting families: two years of free pre-primary education, paid breastfeeding breaks during the first six months and paid parental leave.

According to the Irish Health Minister, Simon Harris, children are ‘nearly being born with an iPad in their hand’. Simon Harris made this statement while speaking at the launch of a new five-year campaign by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Safefood aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of children. Child psychotherapist, Joanna Fortune, agrees with his statement and adds that children aged between three and seven should have no more than 30 minutes of screen time per day and that parents should be aware of their own screen time consumption.

According to a study conducted by Public Health England in 2016, 10 percent of children between five and 16 years old have a clinically significant mental health illness. Children’s charities across the UK are also reporting an increase in the need for their services. David Whitebread reports that multiple studies draw a link between children’s mental health and the amount and quality of free time that children have. Evidence also indicates that free time has changed over the last few generations. These studies show that a lack of play opportunities can have negative consequences on children’s mental health.

‘Mae Cymru’n arwain y byd o ran deddfu ar gyfer chwarae plant a dylid canmol Llywodraeth Cymru am yr ymrwymiad dewr ac arloesol yma ond mae’n annhebygol iawn y byddai dim o hyn wedi digwydd oni bai am ymdrechion diflino Chwarae Cymru. Mae’r berthynas fu rhwng Llywodraeth Cymru a Chwarae Cymru hyd yma yn rhywbeth y dylid ei ddathlu, sy’n golygu bod y sefyllfa bresennol hyd yn oed yn fwy rhyfeddol.
‘Wales is leading the world in terms of legislating for children's play and the Welsh Government should be commended for this bold and innovative commitment but it is very unlikely that any of this would have happen without the tireless efforts of Play Wales. The relationship between Welsh Government and Play Wales up to now is something that should be celebrated which makes the situation all the more bizarre. How can the Welsh Government introduce a statutory duty to secure sufficient play opportunities for children but at the same time fail to fund the national organisation that has been so essential in supporting local authorities to meet these requirements. We need Play Wales to keep driving this agenda forward and the Welsh Government must find a way to make this possible.’
