The response: LOOKNorth partnered with GHGSat to test and validate its new sensor well before Claire left the launch pad. These tests monitored emissions at one Alberta oil sands site and two hydroelectric facilities being built in Canada’s North. This in turn led to a new project between GHGSat and members of Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance to measure fugitive emissions – uncontrolled releases of gases – from two tailings ponds and one mine.

First, Canada built the world's most advanced subsea cabled observatories, resulting in an unprecedented flow of real-time data and images from the ocean floor. Then other coastal countries came calling to see how we did it. Ocean Networks Canada Innovation Centre (ONCIC) not only fields those calls, it is also assembling consortia of Canadian companies with the expertise and experience needed to build and maintain similar systems for a $3-billion global market projected to double in size in just a few years.

At its core, engagement is about building a relationship. It is also an exercise in marketing. The IFA, for example, is offering (selling) connections to experts and expertise to promote healthy ageing, pointing its stakeholders in the direction of the information they need. The stakeholders, depending on which sector they represent (for example governments, NGOs, industry and others), may be looking for (buying) benefits in terms of social change or a better understanding of the consumer market and demographics.

The mobile treatment system was deployed at one of the reserves within the Lytton First Nations in the fall of 2014 where it was hooked up to the community's water supply - allowing for the evaluation of various alternative treatment options. This strategy not only provided an opportunity to the team on the best treatment strategy suitable for the community's water, but also helped the community water operators to become familiar with the proposed solutions and offer feedback towards optimizing the process.

"Our Board of Directors puts us in contact with the stakeholders and potential users of the research -including government agencies, companies, NGOs and municipalities - so we can identify the research needs and main challenges, and collaborate to address them. For example, this could include working closely with DFO (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) to get a better handle on what climate change will mean for living resources in our oceans over the next 10 to 20 years, or working with municipalities on the anticipated effects of rising sea levels and changing storm surge frequency for planning."

GreenCentre Canada’s hands-on approach to developing, de-risking and marketing university inventions has brought a breakthrough technology to market that will help microelectronics companies meet the insatiable demand for smaller, cheaper and faster devices. Developed at Carleton University, the technology uses a process called Atomic Layer Deposition to build nano-scale metal layers on a microchip. Not only does this overcome the problem of connecting ever smaller microchip circuit components with metal conductors, it will also enable large-scale manufacturing of microchips with less waste and lower power consumption. Two Canadian companies – Digital Specialty Chemicals and GreenCentre spin-off Precision Molecular Design – are the first on board to commercialize the technology.
