Avant de rejoindre à pied mon bureau, à 100 mètres de mon domicile, j'allais courir, puis je prenais une douche froide. Le bureau était très différent de ce que à quoi j'étais habituée - les coupures de courant étaient fréquentes, le matériel (lorsqu'il y en avait) était dépassé et l'éthique général du travail était beaucoup plus relâchée.

A typical day for me would include going for a run, take a cold shower, and then walk the 100 yards to my office. The office was also much different from what I was accustomed to - the power went out on a regular basis, equipment was outdated (if it existed at all), and the overall work ethic was much more laid back. I also had to learn about "island time", which truly does exist. Finding transportation to Apia (approximately 6 miles) was sometimes difficult, but always made for an interesting day. Again, the longer I lived and worked in-country, the more I loved my environment.

Todos los días, después de despertarme me marchaba a correr, tomaba una ducha y luego recorría las 100 yardas que me separaban de mi oficina. Ésta era muy distinta de las oficinas a las que estaba acostumbrada: la luz se iba regularmente, el equipo era obsoleto (de haberlo) y en general el ambiente laboral era mucho más relajado. También aprendí a conocer la "hora insular", ¡que existe realmente! A veces resultaba difícil conseguir un medio de transporte hasta Apia (unas 6 millas), pero el día nunca dejaba de ser interesante. Cabe repetir que cuanto más vivía y trabajaba en ese país más me iba gustando mi entorno.
