Major: I think most companies have some sort of a strategy. When I came out of university and went out into the plant they put me in what was called an engineering training program. I gained experience in mill operations jobs. I worked as a mechanic and an instruments technician and as an electrician. With virtually anything that was involved with the mill, I got some hands-on training. It didn’t make me an expert in any of it, but it gave me background knowledge that provided me with a better understanding of what I was doing.

A recent analysis indicated that only two multiple-fatality air blast events in the underground, hard rock arena were reported over the last hundred years. When I read that, my thoughts went to an incident I encountered in the 1980s. I had just seen the destructive power of an air blast and was blown away. At that stage, I had been working in underground mining for about 10 years and had heard the term ‘air blast’ but had not really understood its potential to cause a major ­hazard.

During my second internship at the LaRonde mine, I experienced many of the facets of underground mining. During these four months, I drove scooptrams, acted as a support miner, installed rockbolts, helped the jumbo drill operator, cemented cables, and acted as assistant foreman, etc.

One project I worked on was a standard waste reduction initiative. One hundred expensive and fuel-inefficient four-by-four trucks were being used to transport mine staff 80 kilometres to and from the mine. My team identified that using buses to transport staff would save US$675,000 per year and would reduce the safety risks associated with so many vehicles circulating on a dangerous mountain road surrounded by communities. We met with members of the mine’s maintenance group and with operations managers to implement policies and procedures for the proper use of vehicles. But despite agreeing upon a clearly defined process and policy, nothing changed.

Kate joined Otto later that summer and was one of the few women to cross the Chilkoot Pass. The couple ran a sawmill on Bennett Lake, supplying railroad ties for the railway being built into Yukon. Otto built the couple a houseboat, naming it Ben-My-Chree – Manx-Gaelic for “girl of my heart,” as a tribute to Kate. They lived on it for more than a decade, while Kate tended gardens on the lake shore. Together, they managed a life both rustic and elegant, full of tea parties and hunting trips into the bush.

There is, however, a lack of new prospectors entering the field, something the Bjorkman children are trying to change. “There aren’t very many prospectors who are younger than my dad,” said Ruth. She and her siblings are involved with PDAC’s Mining Matters, teaching courses at schools and in First Nations communities. “Early education is really important,” said Ruth. “A lot of kids don’t really even know that prospecting exists.” The family hires helpers as well, providing training for new recruits.

Awhile back a press package landed on my desk. It included a book that gleefully satirizes those who raise the alarm about climate change and ridicules the promise of renewable energy. If the publisher’s intention was to retread a worn-out argument and alienate all but the most rabid climate change contrarians and status quo champions, the book is a great success. I am not sure why it got sent my way. Perhaps because CIM Magazine covers non-renewable resources, it was presumed we have a stake in this line of thought.

As an experienced longwall miner, who has worked on longwall coal mining projects around the world including in Canada and China, I feel the need to dispel misconceptions about the technique and to comment on the idea of Chinese miners being imported to work in B.C. For the Canadian mining community, finding skilled miners to operate the longwall is not the greatest concern; instead, it is the geology of the site and the logistics of sustaining longwall operations in the long term that are crucial to safe and successful mining. Longwall failures in Western Canada have occurred under foreign (British) management before, in geological conditions with which they were unfamiliar, at sites operated by imported longwall miners. Let’s not repeat this mistake.

I take my case as an example. When I look at the last year, I have had the opportunity to touch base with many senior representatives of our industries to discuss the upcoming convention in Montreal (networking). I have tried to share some of my experiences and learning opportunities with members through our magazine in the President’s Observations (knowledge sharing). Through various meetings of the Institute, lunches and dinners organized by local branches, discussions with my peers in CIM, and through occasionally accessing the library of knowledge deposited in CIM, I have kept learning and developing myself as an individual (professional development).

We were asked to share our test results openly, and as we all came from different companies, we were able to be honest and supportive without the barriers that can sometimes occur during in-house training. My leadership development profile revealed that I am an “achiever” type, one who is focused on end-goals and prides herself on delivery. My challenge was to slow down and look for opportunities to help others achieve their goals through positive influence.

In October, I enjoyed the hospitality of Robert Carey, vice-president of the Under­ground Mining Society, and Jeff Spence, chair of the Saskatoon branch, when I joined the branch and its many welcoming members for their annual Potash Night. A record 300 people attended, including Tim Joseph, vice-president of District 4/5, which includes the Saskatoon branch. While in Saskatchewan, I also received an expertly guided tour of The Mosaic Company’s Colonsay mine, courtesy of mill superintendent Mike Castleberry and underground superintendent Trevor Eagles. The mine’s state-of-the-art mining technology, featuring automated boring and conveyor systems, together with the highly skilled mining people on site, explain why Saskatchewan is a world leader in potash. Of course, the size and quality of the deposits also help!

“Most of my experience is in the large mining operations in Canada,” explains Howes, who is now the president and CEO of Dundee Precious Metals (DPM). “I spent almost 30 years with Inco (now Vale) and Falconbridge (now Glencore). We tried many of these ideas, but they weren’t successful for various reasons. One was the technology at the time wasn’t nearly as advanced and cost-effective as it is today. And two was a stubborn unwillingness to take a risk on innovation.” With the right combination of technology and concept, Howes says he believed he could run an efficient mine using a new suite of tools.

My first official trip as president of CIM occurred in June when I attended the 125th AGM of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia. It was held in the picturesque area of Ingonish, Cape Breton, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Over 200 people attended the event, which featured an excellent tech­nical program that focused on gypsum, zinc, potash, gold, shale gas and coal, as well as existing and potential operations.

In 2009, Carne, Wengzynowski and geologist Sara Dreschler re-sampled three of those eastern drainages. “They all came back anomalous for arsenic and gold,” says Carne. The headwaters of the creek sampled by Dreschler have shown a new discovery called Anubis, where a first drill hole last year returned a high-grade intersection of 8.51 metres at 19.85 grams of gold per tonne. “The one I sampled became our Osiris zone and the one Bill [Wengzynowski] sampled became the Conrad zone.”

What a resounding success the 2012 CIM Convention in Edmonton was, and what a way to start my term as CIM president! The presence of more than 1,400 delegates, over 1,700 exhibitors and 1,000 trade show visitors, as well as more than 3,700 participants in the M4S show, illustrates the strength of the CIM brand and the importance of mining to the Canadian economy.
