I'm finally back to work full time. It's been a hectic three months, and I didn't think I would make it through this ordeal. When the school called to tell me that my son had been suspended indefinitely and I would have to home-school him three days per week, all sorts of thoughts flew through my head. I was certain I would have to take some leave without pay, but I had a chat with my supervisor and my director and, within hours, we had worked out a telework arrangement. What a relief! I was lucky that my employer could be so flexible.

GCWCC is gearing up again, and I'm looking forward to the challenge of meeting our Division's donation target. For me it's an especially great time of year because I truly believe in the cause. I've been our Division's Team Leader for a few years now, and I get to supervise a group of awesome, committed volunteers. We've always made our target. Although it's a busy time of year, I am motivated by the fact that my autistic child benefits from the support of organizations funded in part through donations from the GCWCC.

Yesterday was a day I'll not soon forget. I used my annual volunteer leave day and volunteered at the Genies. What a great opportunity since it was being televised at the Aviation Museum in Ottawa this year. So that the lights and teleprompters could be adjusted correctly, I spent the day accepting fake awards--really a water bottle since the real awards were locked up somewhere. The afternoon consisted of dry runs with the actual stars. My title was Talent Wrangler, and I was responsible for getting the stars to and from their seats at the appropriate times. I spent a fantastic evening volunteering, while enjoying the glitter, the celebrities, and the red carpet. What an electrifying environment! It was a long day but well worth it.

Luckily, I was able to use my annual volunteer leave to help out the daycare and chaperon the kids to Storyland. It was so much fun. I feel fortunate to be able to take the day off in the middle of the week and enjoy the sunshine with the kids, while helping their daycare.

My favourite pastime for more than 20 years has been working on various needlework projects. I often find myself hiding this passion since so few of those around me know what it's all about. While browsing on the StatCan website, I came across a committee that took me by surprise. Who would have thought that a Needlework Club existed at work! I began attending these weekly lunch time gatherings and have been inspired by the members who possess such a wealth of talent and creativity and are also willing to share their knowledge. Every time I leave these sessions, I return to my office feeling inspired and eager to tackle what lies ahead of me.

I work on the agency's first Client Relationship Management System (CRMS). Even though a wonderful team of business analysts and programmers started this project before I was assigned to it, I find that sometimes people refer to me as the face of the system. I guess this is because I deliver training to all our users and work with many divisions after that to gradually get them started on using it. I have to admit, I kind of like it! After all, I am a people person, so I very much enjoy this phase of the project, and I have enjoyed the relationships that I have built with all the divisions.

I just got back from Leave with Income Averaging, which allows me to take five weeks off without pay. Yet, I still receive a paycheque every two weeks because my reduced salary is balanced over the 52 week period. I had a blast visiting my parents in Nova Scotia, going on some local day trips, catching up on my to-do list at home, reading a few books from my to-read list, and so much more. It's great to be able to take the time off with the kids and still have my vacation days for the extra times I need them, such as during Christmas Break, March Break, PD Days, appointments, etc. Having two kids, I don't know what I would do without the Leave with Income Averaging Option.

Last Friday, I had the day off. It wasn't a vacation but my compressed day off. Because I work an extra 50 minutes every day, I get a day off every second Friday. My manager encouraged me to try it with the understanding that if it didn't work out, I could always go back to a traditional work schedule. One of the many great things about working at StatCan is the support for alternative work arrangements. Well, it turns out that I love this schedule! In exchange for slightly longer work days, every other week I get a day off that's just for me. Sometimes I do lots, but mostly I just use my day off to read and catch up on the things I rarely get a chance to do.

That day happened three years ago, and I've never looked back. My assignment in Marketing Communications required lots of learning, training, patience and hard work. But, I received a lot of support in every way, as well as encouragement to participate in promotional writing and design. What a great experience! While building on our knowledge of these new and emerging media outlets and community groups, I was able to raise their awareness of the numerous studies and surveys that we do at Statistics Canada. I developed some presentations for media outlets and community groups on how to find and use our data. And, this led to a need for monitoring and examining these publications and news stories in the print and web media. It was not possible to monitor TV and Radio. However, due to the relationships forged, some publications let me know whenever they published our news. All these activities combined to help us identify the statistical information needs of these various community groups and to develop better ways for them to access it. I am not sure how the future will unfold, but for now, I'm thrilled to be in a field where I can use my skills and passion at Statistics Canada to make a difference.

Proficiency in both official languages is among the requirements of my job. My turn to attend French classes full time arrived. I was nervous at first, not sure how I would do, or what it would be like to be a student again and attend classes all day for several months. Statistics Canada has its own facilities, so I was able to study on site. I didn't have to worry about traveling to a different part of city, finding parking and such. Qualified professionals instruct the students and actually made the whole experience fun as well as informative. When the time came to be evaluated for competency, we were able to complete the series of tests at Statistics Canada in friendly surroundings. An unexpected bonus: now I can frequent the many fine French restaurants in the Ottawa area and order in the official language of my choice. Bon appétit.

So I have been in my new position in the Market Research section at StatCan for about a month now and I love it. Even though I have the flexibility to transfer back to my old position if I want, I think I am going to stay in this new position. The people are great, the work is interesting, and I really dig my awesome new title - Marketing Officer! In a way I guess I have fulfilled a childhood dream - ever since I was a little boy I wanted to be an Officer..well..a Police Officer, but Marketing Officer is close enough!

I have always wanted to see the mountains in Western Canada close up. Since part of my job involves helping Statistics Canada form relationships with some of Canada's largest companies, I was thrilled when I was asked to travel to British Columbia (lots of mountains there) to meet with high-ranking officials of a number of these companies in Vancouver. Descending toward YVR, all I could see was fog and cloud cover. Oh well, it was enough to be in BC, having never traveled that far west before. My few foggy days in Vancouver passed quickly, and I was beginning to think that the mountains were either a myth or really far away from the city.or maybe not that big. On my last day, when I opened the hotel curtains, finally-the sun, and to my surprise, there they were, gloriously huge mountains. I got both my wishes: good meetings and an eyeful of the coastal mountain range. Magnificent!

I joined the two-year SI Recruitment Program in May of 2007. In my mind, the process seemed to take forever, but I knew I was up against a lot of competition within the Agency and was just simply anxious to get into the SI stream. I really couldn't have asked for more from the two teams that I have worked with. My immediate supervisors and chiefs have offered me a tremendous amount of support for my career advancement. I have amassed a ton of experience I can use in the future, and they have listened and allowed me to do my thing! It's very rare to find such a great team, or even management that listens to your opinions about the work. With such great team spirit, we are able to make lots of decisions in no time at all, and everyone gets to be a part of it. After all, communication is the key to having a successful team, and I am extremely happy with mine. It makes coming to work every day an even more enjoyable experience.

I just found out that the project I have been working on was successful. The Chief Statistician announced that Statistics Canada has won the National Quality Institute's award for Workplace Wellness. Success! All those months of researching and preparing the submission document paid off. Even without the accolades, this was still an unforgettable experience-who would have thought that a junior officer could be involved in a project of this magnitude. I have learned so much about StatCan. This experience should come in handy when I prepare for future competitions.

I like change. My work history speaks for itself with StatCan being my fourth government department and my fourteenth job. I normally stayed in a position a few years then moved on to acquire new skills and knowledge until I accepted the StatCan position. It was very different because it required an IT technical side combined with a training background-both of which I had and liked doing. At first, the duties were to manage an e-learning contract of vendor courses for a specific field within the Agency. This type of learning was so unique in the 1990s that it was hard to find a French translation for the terminology. Slowly, the duties began to change and expand, allowing me to create new customized e-learning courses to meet the ongoing needs of the Agency. Today, e-learning has its own portal and hosts many internally developed courses to provide all StatCan employees with just-in-time training. My greatest challenge was the development of the StatCan Orientation course, which is now sent to all new employees within the first 48 hours of employment. Still lots to do.I guess I'll stay for awhile.

You know what they say: when opportunity knocks, answer the door. I did. One day while still in my previous division at StatCan, a unique and challenging opportunity in Marketing Communications came knocking. I was curious and thought, "Why not? I've got nothing to lose." After just a brief, informal meeting with the manager and the team there, I was sold. The job was exactly what I had been looking for; my skills, education and knowledge were exactly what they were looking for; and, the team was great, welcoming and, above all, entertaining!

After graduating, I knew that if I stayed in Ottawa my chances for securing a well- paying job in the government were pretty good. I had heard through the grapevine that Statistics Canada was a great place to work, but I wondered if the two statistics classes I took in university would be enough to get me in the door. Lo and behold, when I looked for jobs at StatCan, I noticed that there were opportunities in a variety of fields, including mine. Long story short.I applied, wrote a test, passed the interview, and never looked back.

In my previous career with a world-class hotel chain, I gained a vast amount of diverse experience in corporate marketing and coordinating over a number of years. Unfortunately, my daughter had an accident and needed me to be with her 24/7. Without hesitation, I quit my job to focus on her rehab. After a little over year, she was on the road to recovery, and I was looking at getting back into the private sector workforce, which was harder than I expected due to that large gap in my work history. So I changed my strategy and widened my scope to include government and the non profit sectors. It took six months, but I finally landed a position with another government department, which ultimately opened the door to an exciting opportunity at Statistics Canada. I was looking for a position that would capitalize on all my previous experience and in which I could make a difference. As a member of Statistics Canada's outreach program within Communications, I get to work with ethno-cultural third language media and community groups. The perfect plunge.

When I saw my first print advertisement featured on the back of The Beaver, a renowned magazine dedicated to Canadian history and culture, well.words could not express my excitement. What's more, there it was on the "Featured Magazines" rack at Chapters, too. My fiancée at the time (who, I should add, is now my beautiful wife) was so proud of me. I had spent countless hours creating the ad, promoting the Canada Year Book Historical Collection website-a very unique site produced by the Agency. My design concept for the ad was a huge success-what a confidence-booster! Since then, I've aimed to steadily up the ante, so to speak, with ever more creative and effective work.

I was born with a congenital lack of stage fright, which means that if there's a need for any public speaking, the others bolt for the exits and nominate me to go forth and speak. Since StatCan is in the business of telling the world about our findings, this happens rather often. Usually this involves presenting at conferences or talking to the news media over the phone. Far less often, it involves a TV interview. Nevertheless, it happens. After our last data release, I was ferried to a studio, perched upon a high stool in the middle of a black room with a camera hung from the ceiling a few inches in front of my face. Unnervingly bright lights shone in my eyes and an earpiece fed me the questions from the TV program hosts in Toronto; still, I remained unfazed. I had done my homework, wore a nice tie, answered simply and clearly, and felt triumphant. I found out later while back at the office that they had misspelled my name in the caption. To this day that's all anyone remembers about that interview.

Well again, in my particular service area, I think the organization provides a lot of good value to aboriginal people in organizations whether it's through training, data retrieval and just working with these organizations at the front end to make sure the information is useful and again, respectful of their cultural values. Well, almost every step of the research process. Usually people specialize in an area, but with what I do I get to see it right from the beginning to the end until we actually submit our deliverables. So I think that's pretty rare and the fact that I really love and enjoy what I do is a bonus.

Well not literally, let me explain. As I learned my position and became more efficient at my job, I began taking on more and more responsibility. It came to a point that what I was doing was above and beyond the roles defined in my job description. My manager also noticed that I was taking more and more on and she approached senior management to request that I receive "Acting Pay". This basically means that if an employee is assigned the duties of a higher classification level they can be paid at that level. I have had a few different jobs with private firms in the past and always felt I was underpaid for what I was doing. It is refreshing that StatCan has a system in place to compensate for such occurrences, and management who vouch for their employees.

My friends tell me that I am lucky to have a government job. To them I say, "Luck had nothing to do with it." After moving to Ottawa to attend university back in 1995, I soon realized that Ottawa is a hot spot for government jobs. During the final year of my studies in business administration (marketing), I signed up for the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP), and I was hired as a part-time administrative assistant at Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC). I received training and resources to do my job. My input was valued, and my pay cheques were much better than the ones I got for flipping burgers. The FSWEP experience helped me get my foot in the door. I recommend this program to anyone looking for part-time work that will actually add to a resume.

Even though I work in one of Canada's largest cities and live in Quebec in a suburban, almost rural area that's 50 kilometers away from StatCan, my commute is easy. Because of my work schedule (I start early and hence leave early), I can avoid rush hour traffic both ways. Believe it or not, my commute time is only 35 to 40 minutes. The only down side is that the odd time we have a heavy snowfall, I sometimes cannot come into work because the roads in my area are closed. I am lucky as my current assignment allows me to work from home on such days.

After some "fast forward" training and orientation into the wonderful world of information, I joined the Communications team in StatCan's Central Region office. While my responsibility was to work with all media and send out regular media advisories I was given some projects. One of them was to develop relationships with some Asian segments of the media and community organizations. Another one was to research these segments and update our contact list. This became a very exciting and interesting part of my work. There was a base list that I worked from and my knowledge of some languages came in handy, including included Gujarati, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali and Tamil. Within about a year I was able to call, e-mail and meet some of these community and media leaders. I went to Ottawa to get the media training. This helped build my confidence, and I was able to do some interviews, live and taped, which helped enhance StatCan's profile with these communities.

StatCan's "Violence against Women" survey in 1993 was my introduction to the survey world, and what an experience it was! One manager, six supervisors and well over 60 interviewers spread over two shifts (1 to 9 and 3 to 11) from Sunday to Thursday, calling well over 44,000 numbers throughout Canada to conduct a survey on the safety of Canadians and violence against women. In the end, over 12,000 calls were secured and interviews took place, ranging from 15 minutes to 1 and ½ hours each. What a challenge!
