The project examined educational inequality after secondary school in early adulthood in Germany, Sweden and the United States. It addressed the research question on the role of inequality in 'late' postsecondary schooling. In a comparative analysis of existing life history data sets the influence of the country specific institutional setting of prolonged education and chances to return to education were studied, as well as the resulting differences in educational career patterns of youth from different social origin. The project has been completed in summer 2011. The results show that social origin influences are can be found even among young adults who are already established in the labor force. In comparative perspective, the project could show that this late inequality effect is even more present in countries with higher more second-chance opportunities for higher education. Further, it was found that a large share of the students re-enrolling were actually not re-enrolling but delaying their entry into higher education. For both delay and re-entry differences in school, performance differences by social origin are a important mechanism for inequality in late educational decisions.

CUPESSE brings together both young and advanced researchers with different disciplinary backgrounds (economics, political science, psychology, sociology, and statistics) from ten different Member States and Associated Countries to analyse the determinants of economic self-sufficiency and entrepreneurship of young Europeans. It is based on a survey design and seeks to understand how the cultural context of family affects youth employment and economic and social independence. While the project’s focus is on family values, it also controls for the potential effects of other factors such as opportunity structures and education. The explicit focus on the inter-generational transmission of family values represents the key innovation of the project. In theoretical terms, the project aims to establish the pathways – or mechanisms – through which values and their inter-generational transmission shape the economic self-sufficiency behaviour of young men and young women (18-35 years). In empirical terms, CUPESSE will produce an original dataset.

This project investigates young people’s shifting conceptions of citizenship and changing political engagement patterns. It places emphasis on how the use of digital media strengthens traditional and non-traditional forms of political participation and creates new venues and opportunities for young people’s engagement and interaction with diverse policy actors and institutions. NAYEP studies both the demand (young citizens) and supply (political institutions and organisations) side through a mixed methods approach that includes comparative surveys, focus groups, experiments and analysis of “Big” social media data. It provides insights into how young citizens understand, conceptualise and engage into politics, and how various political actors can play an active role in engaging young people in politics in general, and the European project in particular.

The MZES offers numerous opportunities for young scholars. Graduates participate in research projects and colloquia and are encouraged to join workshops and conferences. The MZES works together with the Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences (GESS) of the University of Mannheim. In addition, numerous student assistants participate in MZES research projects.

The overarching goal of the project has been to understand how transformation in Central and Eastern Europe has affected young people's entry into working life. The initial project stage focused on descriptive analyses of education systems, labor market and welfare regimes in the ten post-socialist EU accession countries. Results were published at Policy Press as a handbook titled "Europe Enlarged". During the main project phase, we conducted in-depth analyses of educational attainment and labor market entry in ten CEE countries using longitudinal individual data. The main research questions focus on the role education systems play in preparing young people for the transition from school to work, and whether this role has been changing in the course of the transformation from socialism to capitalism. Despite rapid structural change and declining employer participation, vocational education at the secondary level still facilitates a rapid entry into first employment. Failing to complete any secondary education, however, is associated with increasing labor market disadvantages. Despite rapid growth of higher education sectors in a number of countries, tertiary graduates have been the main winners of transformation. Nevertheless, we also observed considerable inequalities in terms of attaining different tertiary degrees as well as heterogeneities in the returns to different degrees. The main outcome of this project stage is an edited volume "Making the Transition", forthcoming in the Social Inequality series as Stanford University Press. Beyond the formal end of the project, work on these topics continues through a number of collaborative publication projects.
