Audrey Flack was thoroughly accepted among the Photorealists. It’s true. Yet, many of Marjetica Potrc’s collaborative projects challenge that notion. In The Cook, the Farmer, His Wife and Their Neighbour (2009), she and Wilde Westen, with a group of young architects, designers, and artists, have created a community center and green space, where they grow what they cook, in Amsterdam’s Nieuw West. Originally a modernist development by Cornelis van Eesteren that has fallen into disrepair, the neighbourhood is now primarily a working-class area. Like many projects that deal with utopian ideas today, this one has to do with sustainability and ecology, but it also addresses immigration and ways that communities, new and old, can function together. She brings activities like cooking or gardening, which we don’t think of as high art, into play as a kind of art form.

On the weekend of June 20/21, 2009, on the occasion of Kunst privat! (Art in Private!), it will once again be time for 35 of Hessen’s firms and finance-affiliated institutions to open their doors to art lovers and present their collections. Deutsche Bank is one of the organizers of the event, which is taking place for the fifth time. This year will once again feature guided tours through the floors of the IBC-C, Deutsche Bank’s temporary headquarters in Frankfurt. Among the highlights is the first floor, which offers a panorama of young German art photography with works by Wolfgang Tillmans, Martin Liebscher, and Delia Keller. Along with prominent works by artists like Gerhard Richter, Georg Baselitz, and Joseph Beuys, the focus of the art installation is on young international artists. Works by Francis Alÿs, Takashi Murakami, and Kara Walker document that not only the world of finance has become increasingly global, but the art world as well. The tour also leads to the nearby IBC-B, where commissioned works such as Heiner Blum’s digital orientation system Wir und Wo (We and Where) or Olaf Metzel’s gigantic ceiling sculpture Cashflow demonstrate the many innovative paths art at the workplace takes today.

John Knight is often associated with the term "institutional critique" - with the systematic investigation of the mechanisms of art institutions, their systems, and their power structures. Each of his works reacts to the place he is invited to exhibit his works at. In his current project, Knight engages with the history and function of Portikus and its close relationship to the Städel School. In addition, he acts as a mentor for young artists. Knight is planning a series of discussions, lectures, and workshops that will take place at the Städel School, in Portikus, and in different studios of young Frankfurt artists. In Portikus itself is showing a text work based on a conversation between the artist and André Rottmann. Rottmann, an art historian and former editor-in-chief of the magazine Texte zur Kunst, knows the artist's work well. As an employee of the research group BildEvidenz at the Freie Universität in Berlin, Rottmann is currently working on a project focusing on institution-critical art since 1969.

Yang himself is the best example for developing stamina. His most important work to date, the five-part film opus he has been completing since 2003, Seven Intellectuals in the Bamboo Forest, comes across like a Chinese interpretation of a Beckett piece. Yet the films and photo series of the same name from the Deutsche Bank Collection are based on an old legend: seven wise men retreat to lead an ideal life far from all worldly temptations. This time, however, the artist has transposed the story into today’s China. For the "Intellectuals", Yang sent a group of young urbanites to climb the Huangshan, the holy "Yellow Mountain" in the Anhui Province, to the sea, and to work with farmers in agriculture. Thus, his elegiac images function as metaphors for inner and outer emigration, like the dreams of a society that no longer has any time to dream.

Shirin Aliabadi investigates the role of women in her work. She became well known for Miss Hybrid, her photo series of Iranian women wearing bleach-blonde wigs under fashionable headscarves. The bandage on the nose indicates that a beauty operation was performed recently. In Eyes Only, her new series of drawings, the artist (born in 1973) also deals with the beauty ideals of young women. She shows the eye areas of brides who before their weddings have specialists apply lavish make-up to their faces. This trend not only annoys conservative guardians of public morals, but also reflects the process of individuation in Iranian society. It is above all young people – more than 60 percent of Iranians are under 30 – who are trying to free themselves from the religious shackles regulating everything from clothing to the relationships to the opposite sex.

Many of the Saxon artists whose work was acquired during this period were at the beginning of their careers - for example, Neo Rauch, who worked at the time as an assistant under Arno Rink at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. The show documents an important part of the history of a collection that has always promoted young artists and acquired their works early on. Equally, it was thanks to the purchase of young East German art that great mavericks of East German art could be rediscovered. Yang had already begun this work in 1997, when after finishing his art education in Hangzhou he returned to the capital Beijing for three years, where he had grown up as the son of an army officer. A lack of funds finally forced him to put the film project aside until the documenta invitation gave him the opportunity to finish An Estranged Paradise at last. "As a young artist, I didn’t place very much importance on the market at the time. The public’s expectations weren’t very important. The idea I had at the time was that when I want something, I’ll make it." It came close to being the early end of an artistic career. After three years of unemployment, in search of money, Yang went to Shanghai in 1999 to work as a programmer for a French software firm.

Transition is the title of the Istanbul edition of the exhibition series Edge of Arabia. After being shown in London, Berlin, Venice, Riyadh and Dubai, the exhibition of recent art from Saudi Arabia is now on view in the Turkish metropolis. The most comprehensive edition of the exhibition is now on view at the Sanat Limani. The warehouse in the city district of Tophane near the Bosporus was converted to accommodate the art space. Edge of Arabia: Transition is part of the program of the European Capital of Culture 2010 and is sponsored by Deutsche Bank.

In its VIP Lounge at the most important fair for art and antiquities worldwide, the bank offers an initial glimpse of the new presentation of young international art in its modernized headquarters in Frankfurt. Four current artistic positions were selected for TEFAF that open up surreal worlds to the viewer: the Canadian Marcel Dzama’s darkly humorous images meet the bizarre pin-ups of the Mexican tattoo artist Dr. Lakra, while Amy Cutler’s enigmatic drawings are juxtaposed with the poetic photographs of the Finnish artist Anni Leppälä.
