KariaNet est un partenariat multipartite regroupant le Fonds international de développement agricole (FIDA), le Centre de recherches pour le développement international (CRDI) et les projets financés par le FIDA au Moyen-Orient et en Afrique du Nord.
KariaNet is a multi-stakeholder partnership between the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and IFAD-funded projects in the Middle East and North Africa. It aims to enhance networking among IFAD-funded rural and agricultural development projects in the region in order to improve knowledge sharing and information/experience exchange through the use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs). It started in January 2005 and will last for 3 years. Five (5) countries, i.e. Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia, were identified and two (2) projects per country were selected to be the founding core of the network. Stepwise, it will expand through opening to all IFAD-funded projects in all countries in the region. As a ultimate outcome, KariaNet will pilot an initiative that seeks to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas, and empower the rural through an improved access to information and knowledge.

This FAO/IFAD publication addresses the linkage between water and rural poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. It takes stock of past experiences and demonstrates that there are many opportunities to invest in water in support of rural livelihoods. Its aim is to help decision-makers make informed choices on where and how to invest. It emphasizes the need for an approach where investments in infrastructure are matched with interventions in institutions, knowledge and finance in ways that yield optimal returns in terms of poverty reduction. It highlights the extreme heterogeneity of situations facing rural people across the region and the diversity of challenges and opportunities facing different categories of rural operators, stressing the need to adapt responses to these realities. It recognizes the multiple dimensions of the rural water challenge, and shows how people’s livelihoods depend on reliable water sources for a wide variety of uses. Read the document.

Water is precious in Eritrea, where farmers have to cope with droughts and crop failures. With support from the government and an IFAD-funded project, farmers and herders are expanding spate irrigation, an ancient form of water management. By harnessing floodwaters and collecting run-off, farmers can provide enough water for the crop season. Now some farmers can obtain yields that are six times what they used to be. Spate irrigation is one of the most viable ways of supporting the livelihoods of economically marginalized farmers. It is different from conventional perennial irrigation and it is used in areas prone to unpredictable and destructive floods, particularly in arid and semi-arid areas. "Farmers can start planting their crops only after irrigation has taken place," explains Efrem Tekle, crop specialist in the Ministry of Agriculture. "Since the timing, volume and number of floods are highly unpredictable, this type of agriculture is prone to risk. Farmers need to cooperate closely with one another to manage the distribution of flood flows and also to manage and maintain the spate irrigation system." (Source: IFAD)
