Am INP werden Modelle und Simulationen zum technologischen und wissenschaftlichen Nutzungspotential vorwiegend von anisothermen Nieder- und Atmosphärendruckplasmen entwickelt und angewendet.
At INP models and simulations are predominantly developed and applied for the technological and scientific utilization potential of non-thermal plasmas at low and atmospheric pressure. The spectrum of models extends from the description of individual plasma effects to the complete modelling of plasma sources and plasma processes. In this regard, the focus is currently on plasma sources for surface modification and for energy and environmental applications, on plasma processes for the degradation or conversion of pollutants, as well as on arc plasmas for welding, cutting and switching. Furthermore, solutions for the management of research data are worked out that should enable an improved subsequent use of the interdisciplinary results of the plasma technology.

Modelling of plasma sources and plasma reactors plays a central role in the field of plasma research and plasma technology. Based on extensive parameter studies, model calculations and simulations enable the specific optimization of technological plasmas as well as the development of new applications. The performance of cost-intensive and time-consuming experiments can be reduced by means of modelling. In addition, model calculations and simulations allow the determination of parameters, which cannot or are difficult to be measured, and thus make the analysis of their behaviour possible.

The research area, Plasmas for Environment and Health focuses on interdisciplinary topics and uses the synergies of its three research priorities: Bioactive surfaces, plasma medicine and decontamination. The atmospheric pressure plasma sources, such as dielectric barrier discharges, jet plasmas, microwave plasmas, and microplasmas that can be extensively investigated experimentally constitute an essential connecting link in this regard. The close cooperation of physicists, biologists, chemists, pharmacists, physicians, and engineers with highly specialized technicians, as well as laboratory specialists is unique worldwide.

Research is conducted on plasma-assisted processes for the production of carbon/metal-oxide nanohybrides, important key materials for energy storage in batteries and supercapacitors, but also for electrochemical water desalination. In the project, the targets of the investigation are vacuum processes, such as electron beam evaporation, atom deposition, and magnetron sputtering, but also atmospheric processes based on discharges in liquids for the synthesis of carbon/vanadium and titanium oxide nanostructures. The synthesized nanohybrides are characterized using the world's leading new approaches for high-resolution transmission electron microscopy at MPIE. The aim is to uncover groundbreaking correlations between the nanostructure and the plasma properties to be able to influence the resulting electrochemical electrode properties very precisely, during the manufacturing process. Thus, the project creates the prerequisites for large-scale production of highly efficient electrode materials.
