"Quando incontrai il S. de Brazza nel 1880 in Congo. non avrei mai potuto immaginare di trovarmi alla presenza di un uomo che, seppur sottopelle, avrebbe esercitato su di noi una siffatta influenza. ciò che più mi colpì leggendo le notizie divulgate dai giornali, è che io stesso avevo dato alloggio non già a un angelo, ma a un apostolo della libertà in carne e ossa, il nuovo apostolo dell'Africa. Mi sono spesso rammaricato di essere stato tanto cieco da non riconoscere nel singolare ospite al quale avevo offerto di soggiornare presso la mia tenda, le sublimi virtù cui vi ho letto la descrizione. Attributi e un potere tanto divini non avrebbero potuto non essere rivelati da un'aureola grazie alla quale allora sì, avrei riconosciuto quell'uomo! Che cosa distingueva la grandezza dell'uomo e della sua sublime missione che ha fatto cadere ai suoi piedi i poveri schiavi e l'umanità sofferente per domandare il dono della libertà? .Il S. de Brazza riunisce sapientemente il genio diplomatico della filosofia fiorentina, l'abilità militare di uno di Lally e quell'amore appassionato per l'annessione che distingueva Pizarro e i conquistatori della sua stessa natura. Il viaggiatore senza scarpe, povero e smarrito, diventa l'apostolo dell'Africa, il liberatore degli Africani, la meraviglia dell'anno in qualità di esploratore, il diplomatico vincente, il geografo stratega e il responsabile delle annessioni. Ed ecco allora che la Sorbona lo riceve, la Francia lo applaude, e sulla sua scia il mondo intero e l'Inghilterra lo ammira. Si potrebbe immaginare la Francia quale una donna inginocchiata che riceve la provincia di nove mila mani dall'eminente conte Savorgnan de Brazza".
