Foster + Partners California, in collaboration with Branch Technology, has won first place in Phase 2 and Level 1 of the 3D Printed Habitat Challenge competition organized by NASA and Bradley University (Illinois). The competition calls for extra-terrestrial shelters designed for human habitation and buildable with autonomous machines. Individual pieces thought out as prototypical building elements will be tested in various stages, the idea being to demonstrate the suitability of the whole process, from manufacture to construction and structural performance. At this stage of the competition, teams were asked to use recycled mission materials and Martian regolith together, and to 3D-print a cylinder and a truncated cone. Having successfully competed Level 1, the winning team will prepare a design for Level 2, in which a beam will be printed to test spanning structures.
