63 n.Chr.Starke Erdbeben verursachten massive Zerstörungen in Pompeji. Beschädigt wurden öffentliche Gebäude und Tempel, und das Haupttor stürzte ein. 79n. Ch. war der Wiederaufbau noch im Gang. Selbst in Neapel war das Beben noch stark zu spüren.

63 AD: Strong earthquakes cause widespread damage in Pompeji. In 79 AD, at the time of the catastrophic eruption on Vesuvius, repairs had still been in progress. Even in Naples the earthquake was strongly felt. The picture on the left shows Vesuvius before 79 AD. There is only one summit and the mountain is overgrown with vineyards. Bacchus, god of wine, symbolises the fertility and tranquility of the region.

Ausgrabungen in Pompeij bereits zu Hamiltons Zeit! Pompeij wurde 79 n.Chr. von einer plinianischen Eruption des Vesuvs metertief mit Asche zugeschüttet, die hier weggeräumt wird. Die Stadt wurde völlig zerstört und über 2000 Menschen kamen ums Leben.

In Pompeij excavations were made already in Hamilton's time! Pompeij was covered by several meters of ash 79 AD during a gigantic plinian eruption of Vesuvius. The city was totally destroyed and about 2000 were killed. The diggers shown in the painting are less interested in scientific findings than ancient treasures which they hope to sell later on.

A Pompei gli scavi archeologici erano già cominciati al tempo di Hamilton! Pompei fu ricoperta da molti metri di cenere nel 79 DC durante un'eruzione pliniana gigantesca del Vesuvio. La città fu totalmente distrutta e circa 2000 persone rimasero uccise. Gli scavatori mostrati nel dipinto sono meno interessarti in ricerche scientifiche di quanto non siano attratti dai tesori che speravano di rivendere.

Vesuvius very similar to what it looks even today: On the right the central stratovolcano and on the left the wall of the caldera (Monte Somma) which surrounds the central cone. Before the eruption of 79 AD Monte Somma was part of the flank of a taller volcano. During the eruption of 79 AD this volcano collapsed. During later eruptions the central cone was built to its present height which is somewhat greater than Monte Somma's.

Un Vesuvio molto simile a quello che appare oggi: sulla destra lo stratovolcano centrale e a sinistra le pareti della caldera (Monte Somma) che circonda il cono centrale. Prima dell'eruzione del 79 DC, il Monte Somma faceva parte del fianco o di un vulcano più alto. Durante l'eruzione del 79 DC, questo vulcano collassò. Durante eruzioni posteriori, si costruì il cono centrale fino all'altezza attuale, un poco più alto del Somma.

Auf den Azoren gibt es zahlreiche Lavatunnel. Algar do Carvao auf der Insel Terceira (erste Bildreihe) war zwischen 100 v. Chr. und 300 AD aktiv. Während der Eruption fand die Lava plötzlich einen Ausgang an der Basis des Kegels.

Azores volcanoes offer many examples of lava tubes. Algar do Carvao on Terceira Island (first row of photos) offers the unique opportunity to enter a hundred meters deep into the chimney of a cinder cone which was active between 100 BC and 300 AD. During the eruption, the magma found an exit at the base of the cone. With a few minutes only highly fluid lava left vacated the vent within the cone. Today it can be visited down to the magma level of the lower vent. Gruta das Torres on Pico Island is the best preserved lava tube in the Azores. It is about 5 km long. Discovered in 1990, it contains spectacular lava stalactites and shiny pahoehoe flows, erupted about one thousand year ago.

Algar do Carvao nell'Isola di Terceira (prima riga di foto) offre l'opportunità unica di sprofondare per un centinaio di metri nel camino di un cono di scorie attivo fra il 100 AC ed il 300 DC: durante l'eruzione, il magma trovò improvvisamente una via di fuga alla base del cono, ed in pochi minuti la lava molto fluida ne svuotò il camino, che oggi può essere visitato scendendo fino al livello della bocca inferiore. Gruta das Torres nell'Isola di Pico è il tubo di lava meglio preservato di tutte le Azzorre: lungo circa 5 km e scoperto nel 1990, offre esempi spettacolari di stalattiti di lava e lisci flussi pahoehoe, eruttati un migliaio di anni fa circa.
