In this Holiday edition, correspondent José López Zamorano talks in Washington DC with grassroots rappers Ray Guzmán and Bambu. In this conversation recorded before a live audience at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival at the National Mall, the artists discuss their roots and the sources of inspiration for their social-justice and community oriented work. Ray Guzmán, aka, MixteKo, is a rapper and a traditional Mixtec dancer based in the San Joaquín Valley who sings in three languages (English, Spanish and Mixtec.) Bambu, a rapper who includes lyrics in Tagalog, grew up in Los Angeles and as a teenager went into the underground hip-hop scene. They were featured in the Smithsonian’s Sounds of California program.

Nation’s Poet Sings to Victims of Violence in Baton Rouge, St. Louis and Dallas - The deaths of two African-American men shot by police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Saint Paul, Minnesota sparked mass protests nationwide. In Dallas, Texas, five police were killed by a sniper, in an incident linked to the other deaths. The pain that these acts caused inspired U.S. Poet Laureate, Juan Felipe Herrera, to dedicate a poem to the victims of violence in all three cities. Here is the poem read by the author and a conversation with Radio Bilingüe’s news director, Samuel Orozco. This is part of the series, “Hablando de la Raza”.
