GISDA’s key workers support young people from day to day. The key workers use the STAR system to identify the young people’s support need. Then they will agree on a support plan with the young people that include working on a range of matters such as building confident, finding work, volunteering experiences or training.  They provide Anger Management sessions. Key workers also work supporting young people with various things such as misusing substances, supporting young people to budget and prepare them to live independently.

Once the young person starts work they will be on strand 2. Strand 2 can only start once the participant turns 18 but a suitable placement can be sought before hand.

The office for this project is Hafan Hostel and the staff at the moment include a Manager, Senior Key Worker, 4 Key worker, 3 Support Worker and 1 sleep in staff.

The aim of the enterprise is to give work experience to our service users and arm them not only with the necessary skills for cleaning work, but transferable skills that will be suitable for any field of work they wish to enter in the future e.g. punctuality and Customer care, and there are Agored Cymru accreditations on offer. As it is a new company they are actively searching for new outside contracts that will enable us to offer more work experience for young people. We would like to thank Palas Print for being our first customers.

By creating voluntary opportunities we can give people the skills they need to enable them to move on to employment. Unemployment amongst young people in the area, including GISDA’s young people is high. Volunteering opportunities can help people who have been out of work for a long or short period of time by making them employable and give them the chance and support they need. Already we can see that the project has developed and grown a lot and has had a positive effect on our volunteers.

After making an initial assessment of their needs, the potential service users will be placed on our waiting list till we find suitable accommodation. After we’ve assigned accommodation in a project run by GISDA a key worker will be allocated for the young person. Together they will create a support plan, using the STAR result model.  The support plan is unique for the young person and it will be reviewed every month. The support on offer can be a mix of services that is offered internal or externally i.e. referral to CAIS, Gyrfa Cymru, and Princes Trust etc.
