J’y suis allée parce que ma sœur et sa famille vivaient à Halifax et que je suis allée leur rendre visite. Mon beau-frère avait un petit bateau dans lequel nous nous promenions… Il l’adorait et ma sœur n’aimait absolument pas embarquer, elle n’aimait pas l’océan.
I went because my sister and family lived in Halifax and I want down to visit them. And my brother-in-law had a small boat that we puttered around in…he loved it, and my sister didn’t like going out in it at all, she didn’t like the ocean. But I loved going out along the shore and seeing the landscape from the water. And of course there was a lot of rock involved in that. But we went to Peggy's Cove. I think we drove when we went to Peggy's Cove, but I can’t recall exactly because I think my sister was there as well, because I think she was the one that kept telling me to stay back from the edge all the time because I wanted to get too close. When I’m photographing, I try to get the angle I want. But I’m always interested in texture and line and shadows, and of course that was the most beautiful rock I had seen at Peggy's Cove. And so what I did was, with my camera, I was composing little compositions, photo-compositions, with the rocks that were there. And it fascinated me. I love rocks, and whenever I’d go to the shore, I would always look for interesting rocks or shells, this sort of thing. And I just found there were beautiful shapes that I wanted to record.

J’ai eu des emplois d’été dans le Sud-Ouest et j’ai absorbé ce paysage comme l’un de mes points de référence. Et bien que j’aie vécu à d’autres endroits beaucoup plus longtemps que je n’ai vécu à Swift Current, je ressens cet endroit comme mon pays natal.
I grew up in a series of small towns in northern Alberta. And then when I was in Grade 8 we moved to Swift Current. My mom still lives there, so I kind of of consider that my hometown. And of course that’s where I went to high school and that is a pretty important part in anybody’s life in terms of their formative years. I worked at a few summer jobs around the southwest and I sort of absorbed that landscape as one of my reference points. So even though I have lived other places a lot longer than I lived in Swift Current, it feels like kind of home country. The impact of that big sky, that big wide open country certainly presents you with a different type of feeling. I don’t know whether it’s a greater sense of a vulnerability or a greater sense of potential. It probably…depending on your mood…it probably bounces back and forth, but that ability to see and perceive things from distance is at the very least a different type of observation point.

I have often thought of what is the relationship between craft and art, design, architecture, sewing or anything else right? I mean these are all different practices that work with similar elements. In making really fine distinctions between them, I don’t think really is worth a lot of effort. I will call myself a craftsman because I use craft in what I do. I will call myself an artist because I’m engaged with artistic issues in what I do. I think the most convenient term, I call myself a furniture maker and just let it sit at that. One of the best phrases I ever heard on the subject was that the artist uses skillful means to reach an unknown end. The craftsperson uses skillful means to reach a known end. And even that has its weaknesses, but it does kind of indicate the two currents there. We work with craft and we work with art, and we may see ourselves primarily as craftspeople in some cases, primarily as artists in others, but the artist uses craft to realize the idea - to make it physically real in most cases. A painter, we speak of the craft of painting. The craftsperson is working with ideas. I mean, the point of what we think of as hand-craft now is that we are imbuing an object, creating an object that expresses personality, that has a resonance on emotional levels beyond just the purely formal level and the purely functional level. Well, that resonance seems to overlap with what the artist works with.
