To the south of Puerto Maldonado over the Tambopata river, it is possible to access the Tambopata National Reserve. In this place are abundant flora and fauna of the zone, a good example being the Collpa of the Macaws populated by the grand colors of these exotic birds. Also next to this reserve is the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park.

Al sur de Puerto Maldonado, a través del río Tambopata, es posible acceder a la Reserva Nacional Tambopata. En este lugar se aprecia la abundante flora y fauna de la zona, un buen ejemplo es la Collpa de los Guacamayos poblada por el gran colorido de estas exóticas aves. Junto a la reserva se encuentra también el Parque Nacional Bahuaja-Sonene.

Sin embargo, su atractivo no sólo está dado por la cantidad de vestigios históricos que tiene, sino también porque este departamento está situado en la zona norandina del Perú, y al estar recorrido por los Andes septentrionales, bastante más adelgazados y bajos que los del resto del país en la zona se da una variedad de climas: templados en las cimas y laderas montañosas y cálidos en las laderas bajas y fondos de valle. Limita al norte con Ecuador, al sur con La Libertad, al este con el Amazonas y al oeste con Piura y Lambayeque. Su capital, del mismo nombre del departamento. Está ubicada al margen derecho del río Mashcón, a 2.750 metros de altitud.
