Pwrpas clipio mapiau degwm yw diffinio ffin pob plwyf neu drefgordd.
The aim of clipping the tithe maps is to simply define the boundary of each parish or township.
  Cynefin | Y Prosiect
Bwriad prosiect Cynefin yw adfer a digido tua 1,200 o fapiau degwm a thrawsgrifio dros 30,000 tudalen o restrau’r degwm erbyn mis Mawrth 2017. Nod y prosiect hwn yw creu adnodd ar-lein sy’n galluogi unrhyw un i gael mynediad i ymchwilio’r mapiau a’r rhestrau degwm mewn ffordd effeithiol ac arloesol.
The Cynefin project aims to repair and digitise around 1,200 tithe maps and transcribe over 30,000 pages of index documents by March 2017. The aim of this project is to create an online resource which can be freely accessed to research the tithe maps and their indexes in an efficient and innovative way. In order to create the online resource, this crowdsourcing website has been set up to allow anyone to contribute to the project by volunteering online.

Cyfuniad yw Mathrafal o’r elfennau ma ‘maes, gwastadedd’ a tryfal ‘triongl’, yn ddisgrifiad o’r tir gwastad sy’n gorwedd yn y cymer neu’r fforch rhwng uniad afonydd Banw ac Efyrnwy. Yr un ma a welir hefyd yn yr enwau Machynlleth, Machynys, a Mechain, ynghyd â’r enwau personol Cynllaith, Cynys, a Cain.
Mathrafal is a combination of the elements ma ‘field, plain’ and tryfal ‘triangle’, describing the plain that lies in the fork at the confluence of the rivers Banw and Efyrnwy. The same ma element is present in the names Machynlleth, Machynys, and Mechain, along with the personal names Cynllaith, Cynys, and Cain. (Note that ma causes an aspirate mutation to the element that follows.) In the name Mathrafal, tryfal has been changed to trafal through the assimilation of the y with the two as either side of it in the name.

O ganlyniad, roedd angen dod o hyd i ffordd greadigol i ddigido’r mapiau gan nad yw sganwyr mwyaf y Llyfrgell Genedlaethol yn ddigon mawr i ddigido dros 60% o’r mapiau. Yr ateb oedd defnyddio wal fagnetig grwm a chamera digidol.
The National Library therefore had to think of a creative solution to digitise the tithe maps, as their biggest scanners weren’t large enough to digitise over 60% of the maps. The solution was to create a custom set-up using a curved magnetic wall and a digital camera. The map held in place on the curved wall using strong magnets, and is digitised in parts by using the digital camera. The images are then reconstructed into a complete map using editing software.

Mapiau degwm yw’r mapiau mwyaf manwl sydd ar gael o’u cyfnod ac mae yna fap degwm ar gyfer dros 95% o dir Cymru. Mae gan bob map ddogfennau sy’n nodi’r degwm dyledus, enwau perchnogion y tir a’r tirfeddianwyr, defnydd y tir, ac yn y rhan fwyaf o achosion (75%) enwau’r caeau.
These are the most detailed maps of their period and they cover more than 95% of Wales. The index documents for each map list the payable tithes, the names of the landowners and land occupiers, the land use, and in most cases (75%) the field names.

The 175th anniversary of the first Rebecca rising is a great opportunity for the Cynefin project to demonstrate the value of the information held in the tithe maps and apportionments, and also show the benefit of digitisation.

Mae map Caerdydd St Mary yn dangos rheilffordd Taff Vale a gafodd ei adeiladu yn yr 1830au, ond nid y GWR a ddaeth yn ddiweddarach. Mae Caerdydd yn llawer llai, nid yw’r orsaf ganolog yno, ac mae’r afon Taf yn dilyn llwybr gwahanol
The Cardiff St Mary map shows the Taff Vale Railway which was built in the 1830s, but not the GWR which came later. Cardiff is much smaller, the central station is not there and the Taff river follows a different course

Yr ateb yw ein bod yn bwriadu gweithio tan mis Mehefin ar y prosiect yma. Mae 800 tudalen ar ol i’w trawsgrifio, sy’n swnio’n llawer, ond ni ddylai fod yn broblem i dîm sydd eisoes wedi trawsgrifio 27,600 o dudalennau.
The answer is that we intend to work on this project until June. There are 800 pages left to transcribe, which sounds like a lot, but shouldn’t be a problem to a team who have already transcribed 27,600 pages. The other challenge is to review the pages. That is indicated by the green bars in the charts below.

This project is based in the Garw and Llynfi valleys and works closely with Valley and Vale Community Arts. The aim is to recreate the beauty and history of tithe maps through the medium of textiles, and there are plenty of opportunities for volunteers to participate.

Lluniwyd y map degwm ar gyfer Cilmaenllwyd yn gynnar yn 1838, flwyddyn cyn codi’r dollborth enwog yn Efailwen. Nid yw’r dollborth i’w gweld, gan i honno gael ei hadeiladu ym mis Mai 1839. Ychydig ddyddiau yn unig y bu’n sefyll cyn iddi gael ei dinistrio.
The tithe map of Cilmaenllwyd was made in early 1838, a year before the infamous tollgate was built. The tollgate is not shown as it was built in May 1839 and only lasted for a few days before it was destroyed.

Bod yn golygu ‘cartref, trigfan, annedd’ yw ail elfen yr enw Meifod, a digwydd yn gyffredin mewn enwau lleoedd. Yn draddodiadol, câi’r elfen gyntaf ei dehongli fel Mai, enw’r mis, gan arwain at esbonio’r enw fel ‘trigfan mis Mai’ (mewn cyferbyniad â hafod ‘trigfan yr haf’).
The second element of the name Meifod is bod meaning ‘home, dwelling, residence’, which occurs in many place-names. Traditionally, the first element has been explained as Mai ‘the month of May’, leading to the interpretation of the name as ‘May dwelling’, in comparison to hafod (haf + bod) ‘summer dwelling’. But in fact, what we have here is the element mei- ‘half, middle’. The name Meifod therefore denotes a ‘middle dwelling’, and refers (as stated in Owen & Morgan: Dictionary of the Place-Names of Wales, p. 315) to its position half way between Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain and Mathrafal. The same mei- element is present in Mehefin ‘June, i.e. the middle of summer’ and dimai ‘halfpenny’. It is also occurs in the place-names Meidrum (mei- + trum ‘ridge’) and Meiros (mei- + rhos ‘moor, heath’) in Carmarthenshire.

Nod y prosiect yw trawsgrifio dros 3,000 o dudalennau o’r dystiolaeth yma sy’n bodoli yn Llyfrgell Gyfeirio Casnewydd ac Archifau Gwent, a’i gyflwyno ar-lein.
Project Officer Sarah Daly said: “Although Chartism was gathering strength across Britain, it was here, in south Wales that events came to a head. The people who marched on Newport wanted the right to vote. Most people, especially in industrial areas like the valleys of south Wales, had no way to make their voices heard or to fight for improvements to often appalling living and working conditions.”

Nod Y Lle Hanes, a ariennir gan Gronfa Treftadaeth y Loteri, yw creu ardal penodedig ar gyfer hanes lleol am y tro cyntaf ar faes yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol. Mi fydd yn ganlyniad o gydweithio rhwng y Clwb Powysland, llawer o gymdeithasau hanes lleol yn ardal Sir Drefaldwyn, Canolfan Adnoddau Lleol newydd Llyfrgell ardal Y Drenewydd, Casgliad y Werin Cymru a Cynefin.
Y Lle Hanes, which is HLF funded, aims to create for the first time at the National Eisteddfod a designated local history area on the Maes. It will be a collaboration between the Powysland Club, many local history societies in the Montgomeryshire area, Newtown Area Library’s new Local Resources Centre, Peoples Collection Wales and Cynefin.
