Answer 1: Hyperspectral scanners have very high spectral resolution because of their narrow bandwidths. By measuring radiation over several small wavelength ranges, we are able to effectively build up a continuous spectrum of the radiation detected for each pixel in an image. This allows for fine differentiation between targets based on detailed reflectance and absorption responses which are not detectable using the broad wavelength ranges of conventional multispectral scanners. However, with this increased sensitivity comes significant increases in the volume of data collected. This makes both storage and manipulation of the data, even in a computer environment, much more difficult. Analyzing multiple images at one time or combining them, becomes cumbersome, and trying to identify and explain what each unique response represents in the "real world" is often difficult.

The principal tools used by the Geological Survey of Canada to measure crustal movements are the Western Canada Deformation Array (WCDA), a network of permanent Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking stations, and a transportable absolute gravimeter. Other techniques used in co-operation with other agencies are GPS surveys, precise spirit levelling, Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and permanent tide gauges. These independent measurement techniques corroborate and complement each other in establishing crustal deformation patterns and crustal strain rates.

Note that certain maps do not conform to the regular NTS grid. These non-conforming maps have extended or reduced limits to accommodate the extent of the landmass and maintain contiguous areas. Reduced limits remove large extents that show only water and preserve areas that show land. Non-conforming maps help make the National Topographic System more efficient. Generally, non-conforming map sheets can be identified by their irregular lines on the grid; however, some non-conforming 1/250 000 maps are identified by a light/dark pattern of lines and repositioned labels.

The social impacts and opportunities created by a mineral development can be categorized in a variety of ways. In order to facilitate the discussion, three categories have been identified as a starting point. These categories were selected because, although each has a social focus, they serve to integrate the three dimensions of sustainable development. Environmental and economic issues are covered within these categories but, in each case, the social issues, namely individuals, families and communities, are the starting point for the discussion. Each of these categories is further divided into sub-categories that are not meant to be mutually exclusive, but rather to be reflective of the types of concerns and issues that are related to the social dimension of sustainable development.
