George William Taylor was born at Derby, England, in 1854, and came to Vancouver Island on a visit in 1882. Deciding to remain in Canada, Taylor found a vocation with the Church of England, in which he was ordained as a priest in 1886. Reverend Taylor served parishes in Victoria, Ottawa, Nanaimo, Gabriola, Cedar, and Wellington. In 1885, he married Elizabeth Ann Williams, Headmistress of Victoria's Central Girls School. He and Bessie had four children before her death in February 1895, from complications in childbirth.

La même carte de base du SHC qui servit à créer les 101 cartes SYSTAT© de section de hareng a été utilisée comme carte de base sur écran pour la conversion de plusieurs milliers de données de dépôts d'oufs de hareng en polygones numériques avec SPANS©.
A second mapping project began in 1997/1998 with the objective of digitizing the approximate shapes of herring spawning beds using SPANS© geographical information system (GIS). SPANS© GIS software was user friendly, inexpensive and widely applied in Atlantic Canada stock assessments. The same CHS base map used to create each of the 101 SYSTAT© herring section maps was also used as the on-screen, base map for digitizing thousands of herring spawn polygons with SPANS©. Progress was slow and the work took several years to complete. In 1999/2000, ARCVIEW© was employed to digitize the shapes of annual herring spawn depositions on a 1:20,000 scale, TRIM base map (Terrain Resource Information Management). This GIS software has become the standard in the Pacific Region. TRIM base maps, however, cannot be overlaid over digitized CHS base maps or CHS bathymetry maps without the appearance of small distortions or "shoreline shifts" (McCarter et al. 2005).
