Cette ville a été nommée en l'honneur du général sir John Coape Sherbrooke (1764- 1830), qui fut gouverneur général du Canada de 1816 à 1818, se distingua à Seringapatam en 1797, servit dans la péninsule et fut gouverneur de la Nouvelle-Écosse de 1811 à 1816.

Les Français avaient construit le poste vers 1720 et l'avaient alors appelé Fort Rouillé en l'honneur d'Antoine-Louis Rouillé, ministre de la Marine et des Colonies. Abandonné en 1730, le fort fut restauré en 1740 et servit jusqu'en 1759.

The French had built the post in about 1720, originally naming it Fort Rouillé for Antoine-Louis Rouillé, the minister of marine and colonies. Abandoned in 1730, the fort was restored in 1740 and continued in use until 1759. Several 18th-century French and British maps identified it as Fort Toronto. In all surviving records, the fort's name is spelled Toronto.
