A questo “servire” potremmo dare un doppio senso. In primo luogo potremmo intendere che le donne svolgessero compiti servili, che in senso proprio sono lavori manuali e pesanti, quelli per i quali si ricorreva anche alle schiave; ugualmente potremmo dire che realizzassero un’opera che andava oltre il lavoro retribuito: loro servono, sono utili. Seguendo il testo alla lettera dovremmo dire che la missione delle donne consisteva nell’essere utili agli uomini della comunità; dandovi un senso più ampio potremmo affermare che si riconosce che servono a tutta la comunità.

Many daily women’s tasks could appear to be materially servile, that is, manual, but formally they were free, since they were not paid; thus they would not be considered morally servile, and could therefore be done on a Sunday.
