In 1795 namen de Britten Zuid-Afrika in bezit, dat in die tijd niet bewoond werd door de zwarte Zoeloes, maar alleen door de Hottentotten, Strandlopers en de Khoi-volken die rond de Kaap verbleven. Dit waren voornamelijk primitieve nomadische volken die niets deden om het land te ontwikkelen of te gebruiken en het vee van de kolonisten stalen.

In 1795, the British occupied South Africa, which at that time was not inhabited by the black Zulus, but only by the Hottentots, Strand loopers and Khoi people who moved around the Cape. These were mostly primitive nomadic people who did nothing to develop or use the land and stole the livestock of the settlers. In contrast, the British strove to serve the people of the Cape and soon after their occupation the first missionaries from the London Missionary Society, Methodist Missionaries and Church Missionary Society, were sent. 37

Quand les colons montèrent plus au nord du pays, ils entrèrent en contact avec les Zoulous, qui étaient des cultivateurs de céréales et qui gardaient aussi d’importants troupeaux de bétail. Le réapprovisionnement de leurs troupeaux se faisait essentiellement en rafflant ceux de leurs voisins. "La religion traditionnelle des Zoulous était basée sur l’adoration des ancêtres et la croyance en un dieu créateur, des sorcières et des magiciens". 38 Grâce aux missionnaires, il s’est établi aujourd'hui un certain nombre d’églises zoulou chrétiennes indépendantes.

År 1795 ockuperade britterna Sydafrika, som vid denna tid inte beboddes av det svarta Zulufolket, utan endast av Hottentotterna, ”Strand loopers” och Khoifolket som förflyttade sig runt området kring Kapprovinsen. Dessa var främst primitiva nomadiska folk som inte gjorde något för att utveckla landet utan istället stal boskapen från nybyggarna. Britterna däremot strävade efter att tjäna Kapprovinsens folk och mycket snart efter ockupationen skickades de första missionärerna ut från Londons Missionärssällskap, Metodistmissionärerna och Kyrkomissionssällskapet. 37
