For its part, the PCI having remained with the 4th International merged in 1969 with the “Jeunesse communiste révolutionnaire” (Revolutionary Communist Youth, JCR) to constitute the “Ligue communiste” (Communist League, LC).

En 1952, suite à une scission, se constitua une organisation séparée gardant également le nom de PCI. Ce PCI concurrent fonda le “Comité international pour la Quatrième Internationale”, avec le “Socialist Workers Party” (“Parti ouvrier socialiste”, SWP) américain (cf. plus loin) et la “Socialist Labour League” (“Ligue travailliste socialiste”, SLL) britannique (cf. plus haut). En 1965, ce PCI se transformera en “Organisation communiste internationaliste” (OCI), qui en 1991 prendra l'initiative de la fondation du “Parti des travailleurs” (PT), dans lequel l'OCI s'intègre comme “Courant communiste internationaliste” (CCI).

En mayo 1919, el ala izquierda del SPA publicó un documento sobre la cuestión del programa, escrito entre otro por L. C. Fraina y Bertram Wolfe. Este grupo entonces pretendió tomar el control del partido. Elecciones al comité ejecutivo nacional le dieron la mayoría con 12 miembros de 15, pero el ala minoritaria reaccionó expulsando cierto número de organizaciones abarcando alrededor de dos terceros de los miembros del partido.
