Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Sofia wurde im Juni 1995 von KünstlerInnen, KuratorInnen und KulturwissenschaftlerInnen gegründet. Es widmet sich dem Studium, der Interpretation, der Förderung und Praxis der bildenden Künste des späten 20. und des frühen 21. Jahrhunderts. Eine wichtige Aufgabe ist die Wiederherstellung und Pflege des Dialogs zwischen den Kulturen und den verschiedenen Gruppierungen der Kunstszene, um so ein für alle offenes Gespräch über bildende Kunst zu initiieren. Das ICA entstand aus der beruflichen Zusammenarbeit einiger Freunde, die nach 1989 den gemeinsamen Traum verwirklichen wollten, die bulgarische Kunstszene zu öffnen und weiter zu entwickeln.

Im Rahmen des Gastprogrammes „Visual Statement“ werden internationale KünstlerInnen vom ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art, Sofia) eingeladen, innerhalb eines bestimmten Zeitraums (maximal einen Monat) ein bestimmtes Projekt auszuarbeiten oder vorzustellen, das in inhaltlichem Zusammenhang mit den Zielen des „Visual Seminar“ steht. Parallel zur künstlerischen Arbeit finden Diskussionen mit den KünstlerInnen statt. Sie halten Vorträge und sind für die Zeit ihres Aufenthalts in Sofia Teil der lokalen Kunstszene. Am Ende wird das jeweilige Projekt in einer Ausstellung gezeigt. Die in Sofia produzierten Werke werden (nach vorheriger Absprache) dem „Visual Seminar“ gespendet, um so mit der Zeit eine Sammlung internationaler Gegenwartskunst in Sofia entstehen zu lassen.
