This is because the Grand Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language was compiled in a very special way. It is considered a collective work in various aspects. It was compiled using huge card-files. The purpose of this dictionary was two-fold: to deliver the written language (i.e. words written down from the texts together with illustrative sentences) and the oral language (i.e. words written down during the fieldwork from oral conversations with people). And such words do not appear accidentally. The person who is listening to the speaker chooses the particular sentences that are important to this person from various angles. These people continue a conversation that is interesting to both. After that, the researcher records the information that appears to be valuable. This information may be valuable in a sense of language, but it may also be valuable from the social, historical, psychological and aesthetic points of view. As a result, we compile huge files of our lives, recorded by humans. The date and the references that are more precise than in the Grand Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language are often indicated in the card-files. In other words, people should use this treasury of information. The linguists who use the Grand Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language consider it a thorough, deep and interesting source for investigating such studies as Indo-European linguistics, Baltic studies, Lithuanian language, etc. However, it may also be used for other purposes such as to better comprehend ourselves and to perceive our historical memory in various ways. The dictionary itself and its card-files automatically become the metadata for our self-perception and historical memory by conceiving the text of the dictionary as a certain lexicographical discourse. Although the lexicographical article and illustrations of the dictionary may seem very chaotic, they have their inner logic. For example, the true opinion about the motherland or other valuables may be seen from the particular sentences chosen to deliver the concept of motherland.
