A.Vaičiulaitis was born on June 23, 1906 in the village of Didieji Šelviai near Vilkaviškis. He attended the primary school at Vilkaviškis. In the years 1919-1927 he studied at Vilkaviškis "Žiburys" gymnasium. In 1925 in the magazine "Krivulė" A.Vaičiulaitis published his first verses. In 1927 he entered Lithuanian University in Kaunas where studied Lithuanian and French languages and literature. After graduation from University, for a short period he was a teacher at Kaunas Jesuit gymnasium. In 1935-1938 he continued post-graduate studies at Grenoble University and Sorbonne. After coming back to Kaunas, in 1938-1940 A.Vaičiulaitis worked at the Lithuanian news agency Elta and lectured modern Lithuanian literature at University, in the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy, at the same time he expanded his knowledge by frequent travels to the countries of Europe. In 1940 A.Vaičiulaitis joined Lithuanian diplomatic service and began to work at the Lithuanian embassy in Rome. After some time he had to emigrate to the United States of America. In 1941-1945 he taught Lithuanian at the college of Marianapolis. In 1943 he joined the US Armed Forces, but soon for the reasons of health was transferred to the reserve. In 1945-1947 he was an editor of "Amerika" magazine; in 1947-1951 lectured French language at Scranton University. In 1951 A.Vaičiulaitis joined the United States Information Agency where he began to work at the Lithuanian Department of "The Voice of America", and moved to Washington.

L.Rėza was an initiator of research in Lithuanian folklore. He had published the first collection of Lithuanian folklore (songs) and had written the first research study about Lithuanian folklore (songs). Thus he created the fundament for Lithuanian folklorists research. L.Rėza had completed the collection of songs in 1915. He was prepared to expand it and corresponded with J.W. Goethe on that subject. However, L.Rėza had published the collection under the title "Dainos oder Littauische Volkslieder" only in 1825. He had financed it by himself. The first collection consists of 85 songs (in Lithuanian and German), 7 melodies, German commentaries and a big article "The Study of Lithuanian Folk Songs".

Bronius Radzevičius is one of the most prominent Lithuanian prose writers of the eighth decade, a writer of immense talent. He was born on December 24, 1940. The writer spent his childhood in Vyžuonų village of Utena district. His mother died when he was a child, and father - when he was eighteen. After becoming an orphan, he spent two years in the boarding-school. In 1960 he finished secondary school. Because of strenuous financial situation in an abundant family of his step-mother, B.Radzevičius worked in factories for some time, and acquired qualifications of a lathe operator. Later he entered Vilnius University, where studied Lithuanian language and literature. After graduating from University in 1968, for one year he was a teacher, and later worked as an editor. But the office work was only a toiling burden for him, a necessity to make his living, that stole the time of a creative work. B.Radzevičius took his creative work very seriously. He wrote at the expense of his heart and of his life.

The first edition of A.Mickevičius's poem "Konrad Wallenrod" appeared in St. Petersburg in 1828. In the preface to the poem the poet stated his views on Lithuanian nation and Lithuanian state, characterized its rise and flourish, and explained the reasons of its decline. The rise of the Lithuanian state was stipulated by the bellicosity of Lithuanians, and its decline - by their cultural underdevelopment (the conquered Christians were of higher cultural level than their heathen conquerors). After conquering non-Lithuanian countries, Lithuanians assimilated with their inhabitants, adopted their language, creed, and customs, and lost touch with their ethnic grounds. Thus the Lithuanian state - the Great Duchy of Lithuania - grew more and more non-Lithuanian, and finally faded to bygones. Lithuanian language and ethnic culture remains preserved by the common people only. Still, the majestic past of the Lithuanian state provides valuable material for poetry, and the poem "Konrad Wallenrod" should prove that.

"The Songs, Worldly and Saint" by Antanas Strazdas, that were published in Vilnius in 1814, is the first selection of original Lithuanian poetry. It marks the beginning of Lithuanian secular poetry. Though "The Seasons" by K. Donelaitis were written earlier (in the 7th decade of the 18th century), they were published in Königsberg in 1818, i.e. four years after "The Songs..." by Strazdas. "The Songs..." by Strazdas and "The Seasons" by K. Donelaitis are at the sources of all Lithuanian fiction.

Mikalojus Husovianas is a poet and humanist whose works are directly linked with Lithuania who wrote in Latin. Little is known about his origins and life. M. Husovianas was a citizen and a patriot of the multinational Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The turn for literature in I.Simonaitytė became obvious very early. Her small works were published in newspapers of Lithuania Minor, but up till 1935 her name was unknown in the world of literature. In this year she was granted a State literary award for the novel "The Fate of Šimoniai Family from Aukštujai". Since 1936 I.Simonaitytė dedicated herself to the literature work entirely; she was granted a state pension. In 1938-1939 the writer was undergoing a treatment in Switzerland. When Germany tore away Klaipėda district from Lithuania, I.Simonaitytė settled in Kaunas.

P.Vaičaitis was born on February 14, 1876 in the village of Santakos belonging to the Sintautai community near Šakiai. He went to the Sintautai primary school and later learned at the Marijampolė gymnasium. After obtaining maturity certificate, parents were persuading him to enter the Clerical Seminary at Seinai, but Pranas Vaičaitis did not obey. In the same year he entered the Law Faculty of St. Petersburg University. Despite hard material conditions, Pranas Vaičaitis actively participated in the activities of Lithuanian societies; he was writing and translating, cooperating in the prohibited Lithuanian press. In 1900 he graduated from University and began to work at the Library of Russian Academy of Sciences, but soon got seriously ill and returned to Lithuania.
