The image processing system is based upon the Matrox Iris GT smart camera. The application was developed with Matrox Design Assistant, an integrated development environment (IDE) that is bundled with the camera.

The inspection application was developed using Matrox Design Assistant, an integrated development environment (IDE) bundled with Iris GT smart camera. The IDE enables users to create machine vision applications by constructing flowcharts instead of coding programs or scripts.

Zwei sechsachsige Kuka Industrieroboter — zu beiden Seiten der Fahrzeugkarosse platziert — nehmen Radschrauben und Felgen aus der Bereitstellungsstation auf und schrauben sie an das Fahrzeug. Die Roboter arbeiten synchron mit der Fördertechnik des Fahrzeuges und folgen während der Montage der Bewegung des Fahrzeuges. Jeder Roboter verfügt über eine spezielle Beleuchtung mit Polarisations- und Infrarotfiltern sowie eine Smartkamera Matrox Iris GT. Die Smartkamera lokalisiert den Mittelpunkt der Radfelge und berechnet seine Position (x, y), die Rotation (Rz) des Lochkreises und die Entfernung zur Kamera (z) mit kalibrierten Koordinaten. Bevor diese Koordinaten an den Roboter übermittelt werden, wird durch die Smartkamera überprüft, ob das erkannte Felgendesign mit dem von der SPS-Steuerung vorgegebenen Design übereinstimmt. Dieser letzte Prüfschritt verhindert die Montage einer falschen Felge an die Fahrzeugkarosse. Dreizehn verschiedene Radkombinationen können dabei identifiziert werden — sieben Felgendesigns und vier Lackarten (weiß, silber, anthrazit und schwarz). Der gesamte automatisierte Prozess der Radmontage hat eine Durchlaufzeit von nur 54 Sekunden.
