The de­cline was espe­cially severe in the EU Mem­ber States of Cent­ral and Eastern Europe, as well as in Rus­sia, while ex­pan­sions were re­cor­ded in the West­ern Balkans and Tur­key. New fea­tures of FDI have ap­peared re­cently in the Cent­ral European coun­tries, which are deeply in­teg­rated into mul­tina­tional pro­duc­tion net­works.
In 2015, the FDI inflow to the Central, East and Southeast Euro­pean (CESEE) coun­tries fell to its lowest level since 2008, while global FDI reco­vered. The decline was espe­cially severe in the EU Member States of Central and Eastern Europe, as well as in Russia, while expan­sions were recorded in the Western Balkans and Turkey. New features of FDI have appeared recently in the Central Euro­pean coun­tries, which are deeply inte­grated into multi­na­tional produc­tion networks. FDI inflows fluc­tuate more wildly than before and have lost their close connec­tion with economic growth or changes in the busi­ness envi­ron­ment. Capital rela­tions between subsi­dia­ries and parent compa­nies have become more complex: capital reserves, losses and profits are shifted around within multi­na­tional conglo­me­rates in various forms of FDI and income. Recent deve­lop­ments in spoken corpus analysis have gene­rated a lot of quan­ti­ta­tive infor­ma­tion about academic spea­king. However, success­fully exploiting such infor­ma­tion to inform EAP pedagogy calls for addi­tional quali­ta­tive inter­pre­ta­tion that takes into account insti­tu­tional speech events and stylistic varia­bi­lity. Corpus insights enable us to go beyond formal features of the grammar and the lexicon to an under­stan­ding of pheno­mena such as chun­king, turn-­ta­king, discourse marking and prag­matic features of mono­logic and inter­ac­tive teaching and learning styles.

From Writing to Ranking In this work­shop, Mendeley Commu­nity Manager Chris­to­pher Tancock will host a session explo­ring why and how journal and rese­arch quality is measured. We will consider the origins, features and draw­backs of the Impact Factor as well as looking at the H-Index, SCImago Journal Rank and several other metrics. Our In­sti­tute has a long tra­di­tion of re­search into the lan­guage-spe­cific aspects of busi­ness and eco­nom­ics. Re­search pro­jects fo­cus­sing on ter­min­o­logy and LSP (Lan­guage for Spe­cific Pur­poses) ex­plore lex­ico-­gram­mat­ical fea­tures, genre and re­gister in vari­ous busi­ness con­texts.
Our Insti­tute has a long tradi­tion of rese­arch into the langua­ge-­spe­cific aspects of busi­ness and econo­mics. Rese­arch projects focus­sing on termi­no­logy and LSP (Language for Specific Purposes) explore lexi­co-gram­ma­tical features, genre and register in various busi­ness contexts. Studies of EMI (Englis­h-­Me­dium Instruc­tion) examine how busi­ness know­ledge and theo­ries are commu­ni­cated at univer­si­ties where English is used as the teaching language, which has become an inte­gral aspect of inter­na­tio­na­li­sa­tion at leading busi­ness schools. Rese­arch findings origi­na­ting from these fields are directly rele­vant for students, instruc­tors and prac­ti­tio­ners alike.

As re­search over the last dec­ade has shown, blogs are to be regarded as a me­dium rather than a genre (see e.g. Her­ring et al 2005, Ke­hoe and Gee 2012) and stud­ies have, for example, ana­lysed fea­tures of in­ter­tex­tu­al­ity in blogs and how they cre­at­ively link to other texts (see e.g. My­ers 2010).
This study explores the inter­ac­tive poten­tial of blogs and the cohe­sive and inter­ac­tional rela­tions that exist between blog posts and their asso­ciated reader comments. As rese­arch over the last decade has shown, blogs are to be regarded as a medium rather than a genre (see e.g. Herring et al 2005, Kehoe and Gee 2012) and studies have, for example, analysed features of inter­textua­lity in blogs and how they crea­tively link to other texts (see e.g. Myers 2010). At the same time, there is scope to explore the inter­play between the diffe­rent compo­nent parts of blogs. That is to say that further rese­arch is needed on the way blog posts and comments are linked and on the type of lingu­istic means that are used to esta­blish connec­tions between these buil­ding blocks of blogs in addi­tion to medi­um­-­spe­cific features such as the chro­no­lo­gical order and dating of comments.
