First registrations of motor vehicles

Statistics Finland's statistics on motor vehicles are based on the vehicle traffic register of the Finnish Transport Safety Agency, which contains data on all road transport vehicles liable for registration on Mainland Finland. First registrations are drawn monthly from the register for Statistics Finland. Ålands Motorfordonsbyrå supplies to Statistics Finland annual statistics on first registrations on the Åland Islands, and these data are added to the long time series on first registrations. Vehicles in the separate register of the defence forces are no included in Statistics Finland's statistics on motor vehicles.

The popularity of mobile services has not affected the demand of fixed broadband subscriptions. The use of mobile data transmission services has increased considerably in recent years. In late 2012, about 4.8 million mobile subscriptions had monthly data transfer plan. Slightly less than half of these were so-called mobile broadband subscriptions without usage limitations set in advance. In addition, about 0.9 million mobile subscriptions had data transfer plans based on other than monthly plans.  The volume of fixed-line broadband subscriptions has remained rather stable during the past years. Compared to the level of 2012, the proportion of the changes in recent years is only a few per cent.  The ones that grew most during 2012 of fixed broadband subscriptions based on various technologies, were real estate and building subscriptions (by over 110,000 subscriptions) and cable modem subscriptions (by approximately 50,000 subscriptions). Even though the number of subscriptions using DSL technology is dropping, approximately 65 per cent of fixed broadband subscriptions were still based on DSL technology at the end of 2012. About 18 per cent were cable modem subscriptions and about 14 per cent were real estate and building subscriptions.Consumers have consistently switched to use fixed broadband subscriptions that are faster than before. At the end of 2012, only 7 per cent of fixed broadband subscriptions had a download speed of less than 2 Mbps, while at the end of 2008, for example, the corresponding figure was about 40 per cent.

The data is collected bi-annually. The subscriptions have been reported in the number of pieces according to 30 June and 31 December.  

The minimum speed of a broadband subscription from the network to the user is 144 kbit/s. The number of subscriptions includes both prepaid subscriptions, which are paid for in advance, and postpaid subscriptions, which are paid afterwards, and which form the majority of the subscription volume. Call minutes dropped at the end of 2012During the second half of 2012, the number of call minutes made from the mobile network decreased for the first time. At annual level, the drop is small (under one per cent).  Even though the change is relatively small, it can be a significant change, because the number of mobile call minutes has increased so far continuously. Whether the change in question is a seasonal variation or a real change in the development, can be seen in the future.The number of text and multimedia messages continued to increase in 2012. Compared to the previous year, the use of multimedia messages grew by one quarter. The growth of the text message volumes waned in the latter half of the year. Nevertheless, the use of text messages increased clearly as well at annual level.The number of call minutes made from the fixed telephone network decreased over 15 per cent during 2012. The decrease has continued and at the same time it has slowed down slightly in comparison with the previous years.

The data is collected bi-annually. Call minutes and the number of messages have been reported in millions during the time periods of 1 January - 30 June and 1 July - 31 December.

Fixed network call minutes contain the total number of call minutes made by household and corporate customers from the fixed network (including local, national and international calls, calls to service and freephone numbers and national corporate numbers and mobile subscriptions).

The number of minutes of mobile calls made in Finland (subscriptions or prepaid) by household and corporate customers is included in the title 'Mobile call minutes'.

The number of SMS messages includes all text messages sent in Finland.

The number of MMS messages includes all multimedia messages sent in Finland.

At-risk-of-poverty rate

Number of people at risk of poverty 704,000 in 2011 Statistics Finland's income distribution statistics indicate that a total of 704,000 persons were at risk of poverty in 2011. This is 13.2 per cent of the population. The number of children aged under 18 living in low income households was 120,000, which is 11 per cent of all children. The at-risk-of-poverty rates (poverty risks) of both the whole population and population subgroups have remained unchanged in recent years.A person whose household income per consumption unit 1) is less than 60 per cent of the median income is considered living at risk of poverty. This income threshold was approximately EUR 13,640 per year, or EUR 1,140 per month, in a one person household in 2011. The at-risk-of-poverty rates were highest for unemployed persons, of whom 44 per cent were at risk of poverty. Also other non-employed persons had high poverty risks: the at-risk-of-poverty rate of students was 27 per cent and that of pensioners 19 per cent. Poverty risks can also be viewed with a fixed low income threshold set to that of some preceding year. This fixed threshold does not change yearly. A fixed low income threshold describes better how poverty risk develops during weak economic growth. Calculated with a fixed low income threshold of 2005, the at-risk-of poverty rate declined until 2009, but has after that remained unchanged. In 2011, the number of people at risk of poverty calculated with the fixed low income threshold was around 500,000 and the share of the population 9.4 per cent. Statistical release

Low-income earners are considered those whose household's total disposable income per consumption unit (so-called equivalent income) is lower than 60 per cent of the equivalent median income of all households. The proportion of those below this income limit is called the low income rate. The euro-denominated limit for low income varies by year.
