It’s hard to draw objects and put movement into them. It’s harder to portray people. And even harder to portray people who are building nice things. In this exhibition Diego Besné has set down in his drawings a scene that looks familiar to us now, but which in a few years we’ll remember as something unrepeatable. Every time has its music in every venue. These are the components of the music scene in our city in recent years. Diego Besné has retained them, blinked and simply drawn them. And without stopping smiling, he’s managed to freeze them in simple strokes and delicate watercolours. In beautiful, unrepeatable drawings.

Cada tiempo tiene su música en cada espacio. Estos son los componentes del panorama musical de los últimos años de nuestra ciudad. Diego Besné los ha retenido, ha parpadeado y simplemente los ha dibujado. Y sin dejar de sonreír, ha logrado congelarlos en trazos sencillos y acuarelas livianas. The band members appear one by one, telling it their way, and it's impossible not to get swept away by the anticipation and euphoria. Five working class lads from Islington, sons of the '60s, soul boys and failed punks reborn as feather-fettled new romantics. From the days of Blitz to the first #1s, from "To cut a long story short" to Spandaumanía, world tours, Live Aid, fatigue and collapse, lawsuits and a bitter ending. But the story lives on. Like the songs.

San Sebastián, 1986), captures a glorious moment in music in her drawings, and does so in a hedonist way, with loving care and above all recreating a highly personal inner world. In this way her drawings make up a kind of family album, where the pictures create relations between one another, like in the old photo albums where we come across forgotten memories. Her colourful illustrations with their naive style take the viewer back to the not-so-distant days when the lack of information meant one could only imagine what any artist was like. This results in pictures that seem to have been drawn from idealised impressions and the pure emotion of the songs. Many of the greatest artists and bands in the world of rock, soul, country, jazz or folk come together in this exhibition. All of them are personalities who contributed to the development of styles of music than marked a generation, influenced those that followed and will be fundamental for those to come.

Super Duper Alice Cooper uses photographs and original footage combined with the voice of the only possible narrator – Cooper himself – to retell a rollercoaster life that went belly up in the middle. The result is addictive, intimate (come on, it's Alice Cooper).

You Pretty Things”, una versión del “Let’s spend the night together” stoniano, otra de la Velvet Underground, “White light/White heat”) y un montón de maquillaje, arte escénico, tablas y emoción. Un filme sublime, con el Escuálido Duque Blanco en su momento más genial y andrógino y enigmático, que haría pura historia musical.

For many years I was able to make lots of things for TV and live from my programmes, all of them related to culture and music, and today I find that amazing. This means I see my own work as an oddity on the Spanish television scene.

Una improbable rareza: el primer documental sobre The Rolling Stones. Peter Whitehead, capturó a los Rolling Stones en dos días de septiembre, 1965, durante su gira irlandesa. Esta fantástica pieza de 50 minutos, nunca estrenada, adquiriría con el paso del tiempo estatus mítico entre los fans de la banda. Ya en el 2012, el director Mick Gochanour restauró el documental y añadió extras. El resultado supera todas las expectativas: he aquí una banda atrapada en sus últimos instantes de candidez a flor de piel, introspección recién amanecida y premonición errónea (ninguno de los miembros ve un gran futuro en esto del rock’n’roll). Contiene momentos sublimes como el de las fans desvelando sus preferencias, o las actuaciones de unos Stones desgranando el Out of our heads, pero es en las palabras de los Stones donde se apretuja la chicha: un afectado Jagger admite estar “actuando” todo el tiempo; un inmaculado Brian Jones confiesa “nunca quise ser una popstar; no me satisface artística ni personalmente”. Es un privilegio poder dar inicio a la edición del 2012 con este auténtico tesoro de imágenes y palabras y canciones.

Es como estar en la caravana con él, escuchando sus anécdotas de improbable supervivencia. Su árida infancia, su amor al blues, su dedicación y el miasma de su apetito narcótico. Winter vomitó encima de la Joplin, pasó un año hablando en monosílabos, murió y resucitó en una bañera helada tras una sobredosis y pasó una época –los 90's- en que "casi no estaba allí". Pero Winter, magullado survivor de una cruenta guerra, aún se lo toma a risa. Ese hombre pálido les llegará al corazón: 70 años, 4 pelotazos seguidos de vodka con hielo, 1 gorro absurdo, llevado en brazos a la furgoneta, sonrisa de hucha en mitad de la cara. Winter falleció en julio del 2014, poco después de aparecer en este documental, pero Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Joe Perry (Aerosmith), BB King y muchos otros celebran aquí sus trucos y arte.

Back in 1998, he declared: "I'm the wrong kind of person to be really big and famous". A year earlier he'd shot to fame for the music for Good Will Hunting, by Gus Van Sant, and four years later, he took his own life. Heaven Adores You establishes a direct connection between the film, Smith's shocking appearance at the Oscars, and his death. Show business was to blame ("It's the worst thing that could have happened to him" – his friends affirm), and this documentary isn't afraid to show the industry what its machinery can do to a sensitive soul. Through radio chats and interviews with his inner circle we see Smith's ascension to the onerous Olympus the path that propelled him there. His childhood in Dallas (Texas), his settling down in Portland (Oregon), punk city, his band phase (Heatmiser), his acoustic conversion ("he rebelled against the noise of his ex-band), his signing to Kill Rocks Stars and the growing word of mouth following the apparition of Either/Or in 1997. And the upwards (or downwards) spiral that would culminate in his tragic death. You just weren't made for the business, Elliott.

Un año antes había saltado al estrellato por la música de Good Will Hunting, de Gus Van Sant, y en cuatro años más se quitaría la vida. Heaven Adores You establece una conexión directa entre el filme, la chocante aparición de Smith en los Óscars, y su muerte. La culpa fue del show business ("Es lo peor que podría haberle pasado", afirman sus amigos), y este documental no teme señalar a la industria y a lo que su maquinaria puede hacerle a un alma sensible. Mediante charlas en la radio o entrevistas con allegados vemos la llegada al oneroso Olimpo de Smith, y el camino que le propulsó allí. Su infancia en Dallas (Texas), su asentamiento en Portland (Oregon), ciudad punk, su etapa en grupo (Heatmiser), su conversión a lo acústico ("se rebeló contra el ruido de su exbanda"), su fichaje por Kill Rocks Stars y el crecimiento del boca-oreja tras la aparición de Either/Or en 1997. Y la cuesta arriba (o abajo) que culminaría con su trágico fallecimiento. No estabas hecho para el negocio, Elliott.

Neil Young venció a John Ford. Seamos cacofónicos un minutito (único instante en el que ese concepto hará presencia en otro recital donde el viejo Young se vuelve del mismo tamaño que sus sentimientos): “The man who shot the man who shot The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”. ¿Se entiende? ¿Cómo pasó? Young no imprime la leyenda: la reimprime, al punto de que si bien no la tatúa en la historia del cine, la hace un santo sudario en ese manto de lamentos que suele ser la música en vivo en la pantalla. Demme por tercera vez detrás de la cámara que debe contener a Youngzilla; Young detrás de la guitarra escupiendo el fuego más amable que un hombre pueda lanzar. En la segunda incursión audiovisual de Young en el disco Le Noise (la primera era un ejercicio minimalista indestructible, una verdadera hormiga atómica), el viejo vuelve a confundirnos. Houdini: hace del cine el lugar de donde queremos escapar para estar ahí, en Toronto, viendo cómo él se escapa del tiempo, cómo se vuelve memoria emotiva folk, sin hacer otra cosa que mostrarnos cómo lo han dejado todos sus viajes.

His gospel from the beginnings to the new generations. Stories of stardom, race and family but also of his disenchantment with the music industry and abandonment. It gives us the man that took charge of his destiny with sheer determination and talent, only to later say thanks and goodbye. The documentary goes back to his early days, the Hermanos Montenegro duet that Peret formed with his cousin Pepi. From there we look at three rumberos who took different paths; Peret, Chacho and Ramonet. The first ended up selling millions of records and sharing the stage with the greats. Charo, the 'cool' rumbero that played the piano, released a healthy number of records but never reached mass success and Ramonet ended up selling clothes. Cuchíbiri Cuchíbiri probes the lesser-known facets of Peret's life; when he gave up music in order to dedicate himself to the Evangelist Church of Philadelphia, and how his godchildren convinced him to come back. From a climax to a happy ending with the next generations of the saga; the innovative funk of Lady Gipsy and the pure classicism of Miliu. And it don't stop.

Sus evangelios, predicados desde la calle de la Cera a las nuevas generaciones. Historias de estrellato, raza y familia, pero también de desencanto con la industria y abandono. Los Wild Ones sigue las vidas de Reb Kennedy y los artistas de su sello indie con base en LA, Wild Records. Wild esta compuesto por jóvenes músicos hispánicos que escriben y representan el rock ‘n’ roll de los 50. La película ofrece una mirada honesta a los valores del sello y a la inusual y unida familia de los Reb; la figura del padre irlandés y sus “hijos”. Evocando los primeros días del sello Sun Records y la influencia que el sello tuvo en la música popular, Wild refleja ese viaje. La relación entre Reb y sus artistas es incomparable en la industria musical. Como cualquier sistema familiar, hay muchas disfunciones, pero se las arreglan para permanecer unidos. El sello es Reb Kennedy y Reb es el padre fundante del grupo Wild. Es purista y fanático del vinilo, y es extremadamente reacio a introducirse en la era digital. Es un genio de muchas maneras y ha creado tanto el sello como a los artistas: su estilo, sus voces, su imagen. Sin embargo, siendo realista, Reb tiene que adoptar nuevas vías para llevar a Wild Records y a los artistas prodigiosos al siguiente nivel.

A partir de ahí, definimos el concepto del libro y establecimos los parámetros para seleccionar los grupos a incluir. Marcamos un límite temporal que no nos hiciese retroceder demasiado en el tiempo e implantamos algo volátil y subjetivo como criterio básico: la admiración. Así que hoy puedo decir que soy fan de todos los grupos que están retratados en el libro. Quizá el criterio no haya sido el más adecuado, pero si el libro sirve para que alguien descubra a Atomizador o a Prisma en Llamas (hay otros, como Triángulo de Amor Bizarro o Klaus and Kinski, de sobra conocidos) habrá valido la pena.
