Nel 1207 nel Borgo, per la prima volta in Europa, fu emanata una carta con cui vennero sanciti i doveri e i diritti del popolo verso i feudatari, la Charta Libertatis. Le scritture e il mito raccontano che nel 1367 vi soggiornò Santa Caterina da Siena, e che malgrado l'ambiente non sereno, proprio qui, da analfabeta, ricevette il dono divino della scrittura.

Rocca d’Orcia is a typical medieval town: stone arches and a large old cistern with Tintinnano Fortress watching over it. It changed hands several times. Sul finire dell’estate Rufina celebra il proprio “oro rosso”, con un tradizionale carro sormontato da una piramide di 1500 fiaschi di Chianti, trainato dai tipici “bovi” di Chianina, carro che sfila per le vie del centro storico di Firenze. Il vino viene benedetto sul sagrato del Duomo dal Vescovo, per essere poi offerto in dono in Palazzo Vecchio alla Comunità Fiorentina in rappresentanza della simbolica “Signoria di Firenze”.

At the end of summer Rufina celebrates the beautiful red-gold Chianti, as a traditional cart stacked with 1500 bottles of the wine is paraded through Firenze’s centro storico, pulled by the traditional Chianina oxen. In the olden days, this ingenious system allowed vast quantities of wine to be transported from the countryside to the town centre.
