Numerous devices will benefit from this invention: supercomputers, modems, tablets, cellphones. It should be on the market by 2014. It will also be put to use in scientific projects, such as DOME, a joint project between IBM and the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy (Astron) whose goal is to gather and convert radio signals coming from space. Forty million ADCs will be installed in a huge, extremely sensitive radio telescope that will be used to explore distant galaxies, dark matter and the origins of the universe.

Des super-ordinateurs aux modems en passant par les tablettes et les smartphones: tous les appareils profiteront de cette invention, qui devrait être disponible sur le marché dès 2014. Au delà des usages dans la vie quotidienne, elle sera également mise à profit dans des projets scientifiques d’envergure, comme le DOME, mené en collaboration entre IBM et L’institut de radioastronomie néerlandais Astron, dont le but est de capter et convertir les signaux provenant de l’espace. Quarante millions de ces CAN seront installés dans un téléscope très puissant destiné à capter le son issu du Big Bang.

Although the medieval façade, including the clock tower, remains one of the main features of the new structure, the most spectacular element is actually to be found above it. A vast hemisphere of helium – 25 meters in diameter and visible for miles around – will float above the “arena” and the village. Its white polyamide envelope can be illuminated from the inside or be used as a screen to display projected images. In case of bad weather, this balloon can be lowered to completely cover the stage and seating area, thus forming a dome. A transparent membrane, tightened around its circumference would then transform the square into a closed concert hall, without however being separated from the old walls.

Si la façade médiévale comprenant la Tour de l’Horloge reste l’une des pièces maîtresses du nouvel ensemble, l’élément le plus spectaculaire se trouvera toutefois au-dessus. Un vaste hémisphère d’hélium de 25 mètres de diamètre, visible loin à la ronde, flottera à l’aplomb de « l’arène » et du village. Son enveloppe de polyamide, blanche, pourra être illuminée de l’intérieur ou servir de support de projection. En cas de mauvais temps, ce ballon pourra être abaissé pour recouvrir entièrement la scène et les gradins, formant ainsi un dôme. Une membrane transparente tirée sur le pourtour transformera alors la place en une salle de concert fermée, sans pour autant se couper des murs anciens.
