A young boy is dropped off at an elderly woman's home for the day. A lone man, who rents a room, adds to the unsettling atmosphere. The savage slaughter of a chicken makes this daycare a harsh and confusing world for the boy, who learns caring can be shown in unexpected ways.

Jason's prior training as a painter brings an expressive, organic quality to his film The Renter. He recently received his MFA from CalArts in Experimental Animation. There he further developed this story, which is inspired by events from his childhood. While Jason continues to develop his own projects, he collaborates with his brother, Michael, the second half of Carpenter Bros Animation.

This year the World Festival of Animated Film Animafest Zagreb celebrates 40 years of existence. To add another dimension to this happy event, we invite all friends of the festival, artists, designers, children and adults, fans of many people’s favourite Zagreb festival to congratulate it – with a birthday card. A real, old-school, hand-made birthday card. All imaginable techniques and all possible sizes are welcome, the only condition is that it is made on paper and arrives to the festival headquarters by 25 May 2012.

Elena je diplomirala likovnu umjetnost na Sveučilištu u Barceloni, gdje se specijalizirala za crtanje i slikarstvo. Nakon pet godina pripreme odlučila se za dodatno usavršavanje iz animacije. Završila je tečaj “Naručeni filmovi i adaptacija knjiga” u sklopu europskog programa MEDIA u školi La Poudrière.

Elena graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona, where she specialised in drawing and painting. After five years of preparation, she decided to take her education further in the field of animation. Elena attended the “Commissioned films and book adaptation” course at the European MEDIA programme at La Poudrière. The course gave her a chance to explore storytelling as well as animation and reinforced her decision to develop further in these two areas; she therefore applied to the NFTS to study animation direction.

This presentation will include a brief screening of TED-Ed’s selected shorts, followed by a discussion on TED-Ed’s curation and production process and the unique creative challenges filmmakers face when creating animation for educational purposes. TED-Ed will also present a number of topics for potential animated shorts (spanning the range from science and mathematics to art and philosophy). Filmmakers in the audience will be invited to propose a treatment on how to creatively approach each short. There will be additional “office hours” during the festival for filmmakers to discuss their proposals. TED-Ed will be awarding the lessons to those with the most fitting proposal.

Animation Sans Frontières is a lecture/workshop-based supplementary training programme designed to give European graduate-level animation film and production students an understanding of the fine art and the business of getting an idea onto a screen. With the support of the MEDIA Programme of the European Community, Animation Sans Frontières is an 8-week programme run by and at, in order of appearance, 4 prestigious European animation film schools: The Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg (DE), The Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design or MOME (HU), The Animation Workshop (DK) and Gobelins, l’école de l’image (FR).

Ivana Bošnjak, a student selection committee member, presented a section that, among 43 selected films, hides many whose maturity and quality compete with the finest in the ‘race’ for Animafest’s Grand Prix. She added that, at the discretion of the student selection committee, Bezalel Academy of Art and Design won the award for best animation school. Petra Zlonoga presented a new competition category, Croatian film competition, introduced to highlight Croatian films before the Festival’s foreign guests and to stress its importance by awarding them. The commissioned film competition and the children’s film competition were also presented.
