Holders of a Master degree (or DEA) of the University of Geneva and having obtained the grade 5 or more for their "mémoire" are exempt from  a  "pré-mémoire". Student who would not have realised during his7her Master studies a Master thesis, but instead an Internship cannot be accepted directly within the PhD and have to write and succeed in two semesters a "pré-mémoire de thèse", which will be evaluated by the Professors of the department.

Une fois ce pré-mémoire accepté par le Collège des professeurs ordinaires du Département, les candidats sont autorisés à choisir un sujet de thèse qui doit être préavisé par le Département puis approuvé par le Collège des professeurs de la Faculté. Ce collège nomme un jury de mémoire préliminaire composé d'au moins trois professeurs (ou enseignants détenteurs d'un doctorat).
