Global terrestrial reference systems are geocentric Cartesian coordinate systems with their origin in the earth's center of gravity M. A «Conventional Terrestrial System» (CTS) has its point of origin at M, its Z axis passing through the north pole («Conventional International Origin: CIO»), its XZ plane passing through the mean zero point in Greenwich, and its Y axis completing the definition of a right-handed coordinate system.

I sistemi di riferimento terrestri globali sono sistemi di coordinate cartesiane geocentriche la cui origine è situata nel centro di gravità M delle masse terrestri. Si definisce «sistema terrestre convenzionale» (CTS) il sistema la cui origine si trova nel punto M, il cui asse Z passa dal polo nord (origine internazionale convenzionale o CIO), il piano XZ contiene l’origine media nell’osservatorio di Greenwich e il cui asse Y completa l'insieme in modo da definire un sistema di assi cartesiani diretti.
