Emblematic in its extravagance, the ceremony features masked participants, the Cucuruchos and Verónicas; some wearing morbid purple cone hats, some self-flagellating, some carrying punishingly heavy crosses, some swathed in barbed wire and bleeding, parading slowly to frightening music. All is in aid of exhibiting their devotion and repentance in the most ostentatious ways possible.

Members of the police, secret agents and the GOE (local SWAT team), who almost piously come to help organize and keep things under control, make up an important segment of the procession. Arriving at 8 am to help aspiring Cucuruchos and Verónicas follow procedures as planned at the San Andrés School, regular police are also deployed on the main square, as well as inside the convent, making sure everything runs smoothly. Special forces keep a close eye on the relic sculptures, which are treated like museum pieces throughout the day. During the procession, security forces lead the way and tail behind, and are rewarded with food and beve-rages for their selfless disposition.
The Cucurucho is the procession’s central figure, and he cuts a foreboding presence indeed. His silence and anonymity are an intrinsic part of his demeanor, complemented by the eerie dark purple robe with the characteristic cone on his head, and his face totally covered, but for two holes around the eyes. The original figure is said to date back to the Middle Ages, when a priest would order wrongdoers to stand just outside the church day and night for everyone to see them. Covering their faces could have then been intended to somehow alleviate the humiliation, but today the effect is rather impressive; it has come to suggest the seriousness of the sins committed. Today, cucuruchos are interpreted as anonymous penitents, who seek anonymity in order to emulate Christ’s humility so as not to individually flaunt the fact that they are in the process of repenting; a display that could itself be seen as worthy of repent.
