The Norwegian architect Kjetil Thorsen and the Danish artist Olafur Eliasson have created the new pavilion of Londons Serpentine Gallery, which will remain open until 5 November 2007. The building is a wood-clad fifteen-metre cone surrounded by a wide helicoid ramp that brings unusual vertical drama to structures of single-level pavilions. This ramp moves in a spiral and takes two full turns: it ascends from the Gallery lawn to the seating area and continues upwards, culminating at its highest point with a general vista of Kensington Gardens.
