De FTAA is een zogenaamde “vrijhandels”-overeenkomst die er eigenlijk is om het bedrijfsleven meer macht te geven over democratisch gekozen regeringen; het toepassen van wetten als de DMCA is daar een typisch voorbeeld van. De FTAA werd grondig om zeep geholpen door Lula, president van Brazilië, die wetten als de DMCA en anderen afwees.
