There was a particularly large number of tollgates set up by turnpike trusts in Camarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, but they did not keep to government guidelines and the roads they were meant to fund were of poor quality. When the Whitland Trust built an additional tollgate in the village of Efailwen the local community was infuriated and they decided to take action in a particular style when hundreds of them dressed as women and noisily attacked the tollgate during the night. This was the first dramatic appearance of the women’s leader – “Rebecca”.

The National Library therefore had to think of a creative solution to digitise the tithe maps, as their biggest scanners weren’t large enough to digitise over 60% of the maps. The solution was to create a custom set-up using a curved magnetic wall and a digital camera. The map held in place on the curved wall using strong magnets, and is digitised in parts by using the digital camera. The images are then reconstructed into a complete map using editing software.

There are generally three copies of all tithe maps. One was provided for the Tithe Commissioners, which now live at the The National Archives. A local copy originally produced for the local church is now often held by local archives. A copy was also made for the diocesian registry and that is the copy which is now at the National Library of Wales. This is the copy which is generally used for this project where possible.

Britain has a proud tradition of popular involvement in politics. Attempts to keep those in charge honest and accountable, whether they were members of royalty or politicians, date back 800 years to Magna Carta. This was Britain’s first ‘people’s charter’ but, politics being what it is, the issue of fair representation didn’t go away. In 1838, a new People’s Charter was drawn up, with the primary aim of securing the vote for all men over 21. Women were not overlooked: their struggle for the vote had already begun. In the spirit of setting achievable goals, however, fighting for rights of men was more realistic. The Chartist movement gained in strength and popularity across the country.

Transcribing quite simply means typing out the information you see on the maps and the documents. By transcribing the maps you are digitising all the important information. This will allow us to build a resource website where the transcribed information across all the tithe maps and apportionment documents can be easily searched in an innovative way. As a result, we will not only be able to display the tithe maps online, but we can go one step further and change the way people can extract and find relevant information from the tithe maps.

At one point, about three million people in Britain signed a petition to make the People’s Charter law. The authorites later destroyed it, but this really was people power in action and it was effective: the only demand the Chartists made that hasn’t since become law is the demand for annual elections. There are generally three copies of all tithe maps. One was provided for the Tithe Commissioners, which now live at the The National Archives. A local copy originally produced for the local church is now often held by local archives. A copy was also made for the diocesian registry and that is the copy which is now at the National Library of Wales. This is the copy which is generally used for this project where possible.

As part of the Cynefin project, documents surrounding the court proceedings against the Chartists, following their attack on Newport in 1839, will be introduced and transcribed online. Although the court proceedings and documents were recorded in English, they include references to the Welsh language and to translation. These documents demonstrate that many of the defendants were Welsh speakers and indeed in many cases, unable to speak English.

On 3rd November 1839, about 5,000 men gathered from across Gwent to march through the night in the pouring rain. They were heading to Newport to demand the release of Chartist prisoners. Fearing the power of the Chartists, the authorities were waiting for them at the Westgate Inn in the centre of the town on the following morning. Both sides were armed and no one knows for sure who fired the first shot. What we do know though, is that over twenty men died that morning, fighting for the right to vote. What’s more, ten of them were hurriedly buried in the churchyard at St Woolos Cathedral by order of the authorities.

Who was first to finish? Well in Anglesey there was an excellent team of volunteers in the local Record Office who worked regularly on their material. After they finished transcribing they were registered as reviewers and they completed that work as well. Close behind them was another excellent team of volunteers in Flintshire Record Office, who also completed their county a while ago, but have some reviewing to do. Volunteers are also free of course to help out in other counties, for which we are very grateful.

The second element of the name Meifod is bod meaning ‘home, dwelling, residence’, which occurs in many place-names. Traditionally, the first element has been explained as Mai ‘the month of May’, leading to the interpretation of the name as ‘May dwelling’, in comparison to hafod (haf + bod) ‘summer dwelling’. But in fact, what we have here is the element mei- ‘half, middle’. The name Meifod therefore denotes a ‘middle dwelling’, and refers (as stated in Owen & Morgan: Dictionary of the Place-Names of Wales, p. 315) to its position half way between Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain and Mathrafal. The same mei- element is present in Mehefin ‘June, i.e. the middle of summer’ and dimai ‘halfpenny’. It is also occurs in the place-names Meidrum (mei- + trum ‘ridge’) and Meiros (mei- + rhos ‘moor, heath’) in Carmarthenshire.

In 1830 the population of Llanelli and district numbered some 17,000. By 1900 it had grown to 36,000 and today totals some 40,000. Llanelli’s growth derived predominantly from the presence of tinplate works and allied industries. The one hundred year dominance of metal production in the town began to gain momentum from the mid nineteenth century with the construction of the Dafen and then the Morfa tinplate works. By 1880 the town had seven tinplate works, earning it the name ‘Tinopolis’.

Ym 1830 ‘roedd poblogaeth Llanelli a’r cylch tua 17,000. Erbyn 1900 roedd wedi tyfu i 36,000 a heddiw mae tua 40,000. Gwnaeth twf Llanelli deillio yn bennaf o bresenoldeb gweithfeydd tunplat a diwydiannau cysylltiedig. Mae hanes gan flwyddyn o gynhyrchu metel yn y dref. Fe ddechreuodd y momentwm o ganol y bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg pan adeiladwyd gweithfeydd tunplat y Dafen ac yna’r Morfa. Erbyn 1880 roedd gan y dref saith gwaith tunplat, ac felly enillwyd yr enw ‘Tinopolis’.

In 1830 the population of Llanelli and district numbered some 17,000. By 1900 it had grown to 36,000 and today totals some 40,000. Llanelli’s growth derived predominantly from the presence of tinplate works and allied industries. The one hundred year dominance of metal production in the town began to gain momentum from the mid nineteenth century with the construction of the Dafen and then the Morfa tinplate works. By 1880 the town had seven tinplate works, earning it the name ‘Tinopolis’.
